Here's What Happens When You Use The Wrong AC Adapter!

Re: Here's What Happens When You Use The Wrong AC Adapter!

well....i allways new ds1's had crunch!

Re: Here's What Happens When You Use The Wrong AC Adapter!

StratDeluxer97, The second pic looks like when it fried, it bubbled a little and lifted the trace. Did you have a problem with it, or was it OK?

Make sure the voltage, polarity, are the same, and that it can take the current draw required by the pedal ... you can burn up and adaptor, or toast a pedal, if the voltage is higher it may work okay for a while, but still may burn something up long term. Also if it wants regulated power, that's what it wants (some adaptors output ac and not dc, so that has to be checked as well).

Ok, cheers, i will check that all out, im sure its 9V DC output, but the other things i shall check!!

It lifted up the tracing so I just soldered a small solid wire over to the next solder points and remade the connection..I use small cut off peices of wire from my caps and resistors because those are real thin..Works fine..

Re: Here's What Happens When You Use The Wrong AC Adapter!

my pedal (ibanez sm7) can handle 15v and not go boom.. allthough i only tried if it worked and turned the voltage back to 9v. most of the pedals take 12v without a problem, but THAT one was reversed polarity, because those diodes can take a a pretty big spike in the right direction, but when you turn them around they get picky about it and then start to explode (fun to watch hehe)

anything else broken or burned?

Maybe so,but using anything other than whats "supposed" to be used,is just foolish and chancey in my book...Is it worth possibly screwing up a perfectly working pedal tomorrow by taking chances today? :smack:

"anything else broken or burned?"

The pedal is all fixed and tweaked and rocks just like all the rest of em....$15 later...

Re: Here's What Happens When You Use The Wrong AC Adapter!

coolness =)

oh, about the exploding diodes, we were doing that back in high school lol.. take a 5mm 1.7V LED and slowly turn up the voltage.. green turns into orange and then into red and after that kaboom and the top flies off hehe.. in our youthfull stupidity we were shooting eachother across the classroom with them *sigh* good times

well, in my experience, it doesnt matter which brand the adapter is, as long as it's adjustable and it's output current is not too high (but with all of todays household adapters, it's never too high)

Whatever works for ya buddy! I Use the Boss adapters..

Re: Here's What Happens When You Use The Wrong AC Adapter!

you will NEVER get that smell of burned plastic out of the box.. i know from experience. this was years and years ago when i knew nothing about gear but some how i knew the smoke coming out of the back of my DOD wasn't a good sign!

I didn't smell any smoke in this DS1 even though it wasted 1 4002 diode,3 small ceramic disc caps, and the tracings on the back side of the board...I've got her all fixed and modded now..Sounds as good as any other DS1 I've modded...

Re: Here's What Happens When You Use The Wrong AC Adapter!

STRATDELUXER97 I hear your good at pedal modding. I am very interested in finding out a little more info about it. What exactly do you improve when you mod the Boss DS-1 pedals? How does a stock Boss DS-1 compare to one of your modded DS-1's? I've heard alot on here about your pedal modding work and its gotten me really interested. Please fill me in on some info. Thanks. :32:
