Which then is the often EvH-assiciated pickup referred to as the BlackBack?

Different pickup.

The pickups that were in the EBMM EVH sig model had brass plates painted black. Those were DiMarzios BTW. That is where the name came from, from what I understand.

There is some info on a Las Vegas, NV retailer's site about them. I think I saw somewhere that Seymour makes black back pickups for Quicksilver guitars by Ed Roman but not sure how valid that is. Evan could explain it I'm sure.

The pics that Lester posted are of Eds 5150 Kramer. That guitar was said to have a 59 in it. I`ve read that it was rewound by Ed.

From what I understand, they're exclusively available from him. I think they do come standard on the Quicksilver, but you can get them on any of his models as well as buying them seperately, IIRC.

I tend to think they're not really much different from a standard SD model just with the plate painted black. I've never seen or heard one, so I'm just speculating, though.

ED romans "black backs" are copies of the EVH DMZ custom wound set on VH's EBMM sig guitar
the bridge one sounds like a CC only hotter/tighter and the neck sounds like a hotter air norton. or to put it a better way the sound like the pups on the EBMM EVH guitars!:laugh2: :beerchug:

Heck, if I wanted pickups like what's in the EBMM, I'd go get a Tone Zone and Air Norton. I've actually thought about getting the Tone Zone to try out anyway. It's not exact to the ones in the EBMM but according to DiMarzio, they are as close as you can get to them.

Heck, if I wanted pickups like what's in the EBMM, I'd go get a Tone Zone and Air Norton. I've actually thought about getting the Tone Zone to try out anyway. It's not exact to the ones in the EBMM but according to DiMarzio, they are as close as you can get to them.

If you want your TZ to be a exact tone copy of the EVH custom DMZ all you gotta do is take out the metal screw retainer bar and make sure the "air gap" remains
most newer dimarzios have the magnet glued with a adhesive so all you have to do is remove this retainer bar and ENJOY!:beerchug:

NO with the AN you must fill the "air gap on the stud side
i used a cut strip of .42 low E string and it fit perfect this will get the AN to mimic the EVH neck pup:beerchug:

the TZ stock is a nice pup but a little too dark but with this mod i told you about it takes on a much crisper tone and is tighter, it also loses some output BUT this is a good thing here.
it sounds exactly like the EVH one this way, real clear and ballsy.
the stock TZ is a little too mushy and fat for the VH stuff.
ERIK i think you would like the moded versions better IMHO IF you dig VH' s tone

From that guitar, hell yeah. If given a choice, I'd take a EBMM EVH model over the Wolfgang any day. I'll make note of these mods. Thanks.
