Re: Hey Evan!!!!!
Good question!
I’ve been holding off writing a full review on the Evan-Rude until after I used it on some Seymour Duncan Band gigs. Through some weird scheduling things on our side and on some club owners’ sides, we haven’t played a gig in a few months, which is unusual for us.
So, I’ve really only played it in my (condo) living room, save for the first day when I was blasting it full-tilt in the Seymour Duncan sound room.
One of the design criteria was to design and construct a dual living room / gigging amp with separate channels for each purpose. So, there are two channels. A tweed channel called “Twister” and a blackface channel called “Mudslide.” (Get it? Texas tweed and California blackface).
The Mudslide channel is intended to be the gigging channel with clean headroom to use with my SFX-03 Twin Tube Classic. It has reverb, tremolo, bass, mid, treble and an interesting two-position EQ switch that kind of acts like a pre-set presence control. To be honest, I haven’t used this channel that much, which is why I’ve been holding off writing.
Interestingly, when my son’s guitar teacher comes over to give him his weekly lesson, I notice the he always bypasses my pedal board, unplugs my cable from the Twister channel, and plugs into Mudslide. Maybe he knows something I don’t.
The Twister channel has been getting a lot of use lately. In fact, it’s all I’ve played, pretty much, since I got the amp. It’s a real simple channel with just volume, tone and gain. No reverb. No tremolo. But tone like there’s no tomorrow. It marries perfectly with the SFX-03 Twin Tube Classic (another design criteria) and my Maxon OD-808. It doesn’t get super loud, but it’s perfect for my condo. It’ll get the neighbors ringing my doorbell (and has). I have to say, Scott nailed the tweed sound.
This amp is a head. Currently I’m using it along with an old ported close back Seymour Duncan cab loaded with two ceramic magnet Eminence 10” speakers. I’m not sure if I’m going to stick with this cabinet. Again, I need to play it live to make my final determination. But I may go to an open back 2x12. We’ll see.
The cabinetry is really gorgeous. It’s all beautifully figured cherry wood. The front is one piece solid and has almost a water-like pattern on it. I replaced the cream chicken head knobs with cream barrel knobs. I’m waiting for Scott to send me the Celtic Amps logo to stick on the amp before I photograph it. But trust me when I say, you ain’t never seen cherry wood like this.
Scott is coming out in a few weeks to listen to it through my rig. He might make a tweak here and there. Or not.
What else do you want to know about it?
