HH Set for Classic Rock?

if you have master volume, master tone on a guitar, it can be a real pita if the two pups arent balanced in a live situation. wide open for the neck with rolled back to 7 for the bridge is tough mid solo. this is for a strat so maybe its v, t, t but from the discussion, i think its mv, mt. if thats the case then id put a 250k tone for the bridge pup with 500k for the other controls.

I seldom roll the tone back on neck pickups, so I sometimes only connect the bridge pickup to the tone control on guitars with just one tone control. I just did this on my main Tele and it works great.

PS it works on Teles.

This HH Strat has two volumes and one tone, so if I need to balance outputs I can.

Good advice about just connecting the tone to ine.pickup though, thanks for that

Marshall Origin 50 tube amp.

Don't want anything particularly hot or distorted. More clean going into crunch than flat out thrash. Think mid to late 70s / early 80s British heavy metal. Clear mids and trebles and not too much bass.

Sounds like a Midnight Special would do you justice! The A4 mags are pretty balanced, tonewise and will give you a little of the A2 and A5. That's right where the NWOBHM stuff sits. Maybe try something with an unoriented A5 as well.

Turned out to be a bad volume pot and a bad tone pot. Maybe even a bad tone cap. All "previously cherished" parts. Probably something to do with what the tone control was, and was not, dumping to ground.

The Jazz sounds fine, the C5 way too treble-ey. Most likely due to the very low mids. The 59/Custom EQ graph shows much more even mids and trebles.

Can't always trust the EQ graph.

Think about it... logically, you're adding a coil from a 59 to the C5. The 59 is known for being mid-scooped. So how is that going to add mids to the C coil? (I know there are other factors to the equation, but logically the C/59 doesn't seem like it would have more mids). But mainly from experience with the C/59 (and many other hybrids which I have made) I can tell you that the C/59 hybrid is still bright and scooped. I think it's a really great pup and I personally love it, but it isn't what you're looking for.

Just put an A2 into your Custom pup. That's what you want. Don't be afraid to try a mag swap, it's really very easy. The only downside is that once you do one mag swap you'll be hooked, so plan on doing many more in the future.

Yup. The hybrid doesn't have more mids. It has less bass and treble relative to the mids when compared to a C5.

I am not an expert of vintage humbucker tones but I would have started just using a matched set of PAF as a starting point, like a set of 59s or PGs or A2Ps or SNS, just to know I start from a pair of properly balanced pickups before going thru the rabbit hole of fine tuning.

Ok… left field suggestion. PATB-1n and a PATB-3 in the bridge. Will take you from classic rock to gobs of gain with no issues.
