HHH Strat

Re: HHH Strat

The wood is Koa over mahogany. This one it pretty warm sounding acoustically, but it's mostly because of the body is very warm sounding. The neck is mahogany with an Ebony fretboard and it is 24.75 inch scale.

It's set up as my all out rock guitar with a Super D at the bridge, PAF Pro at the beck and an Air Norton in the middle. Standard Strat style switch with the bridge pickup on its own volume and bypassing the tone control. Nothing special in the wiring department, though, like phase, parallel or splitting.

Wow! I'd think the middle pickup would get in the way of my pick (it does on normal Strats), but it certainly looks really cool!

Very interesting. That sounds like a great combo. Those are all things I'll be considering down the road if I move up to a Warmoth, wood, scale, etc. Nice craftsmanship.

Thanks Mincer! All the space occupied by pickups was something I had to adjust to, but I can still play comfortably. The extra sounds are worth it!

It did take a little getting accustomed to, but it's fine once you do.

Like Aceman said, others have made the transition and do it well.

Re: HHH Strat

Yeah, others make it work. My weird hybrid/economy picking style doesn't quite work with 3 pickups, though.

Re: HHH Strat

Whenever I want to work on right hand technique, I do hybrid picking. It's the worst for me.

Re: HHH Strat

View attachment 77129 The solder wouldn't stick to the side of the mini toggles so I had to clamp the wires between the mini toggle and the pickguard.

Did you try to solder to the plastic?

I've never ever had a problem getting solder to stick. Sometimes you need to roughen up the metal (scrape it with a screwdriver or hit it with some sandpaper) to remove any oil or oxide layer on the metal. Also, flux can be a big help when the solder just seems to ball-up and not stick.

Having a good solder connection is always better than a mechanical connection which can sometimes over time come loose.

Re: HHH Strat

Thanks for the advice Doc. I sanded the side panel of the mini toggle thoroughly with 220s then applied some flux and the solder stuck. The first time I tried, all I did was scratch it a bit with a screw. Each position on that green strat with SSL-5,1,1s are now silent with headphones.

Hmmm...about time I tried this.
After some recent pickup experimentation, I ended up with 2 Lace Deathbuckers and 1 Alumitone Humbucker lying around. I still have one strat neck and 1 swamp ash body from Mighty Mite lying around as well....(btw, recent Mighty Mites are pretty good!).
It's time to bring out the carpentry tools and soldering iron!!!
