Higain amp suggestions Peavey/Marshall

I've been thinking of scaleing down the cheap and un-used stuff in my collection and use the funds towards some new gear.... One of my thoughts has been getting another high gain head..... I have the 5150, and a Marshall 800, and a Classic 50 head... all i love and use... But i have some solid state stuff i never should of bought and a few guitars that sound like poop... One of the things i'm thinking of is another head

I like Peavey's... I am thinking along the lines of the JSX or simular Peavey heads... I'd like to hear from owners of these Peavey amps.. I may grab another 5150 head if i can find one cheap enough... but part of me is likeing the idea of a JSX style amp

I am thinking Marshall 2000 series as well since they dropped the prices 30% in Canada!!!! Amazing! Any comments on this series and the models in it?

And i have also been thinking higher end type stuff but will never afford it really... saddly.... I'd love a nice Boogie oneday but i can'y afford that stuff!

Re: Higain amp suggestions Peavey/Marshall

You can afford anything you want, as long as you've got gear to sell, plus some extra money to kick in. I think you should look at everything you own, and quickly sell off all the second rate stuff, and replace it with something that totally blows you away. It gets to the point where it's better to be playing 4 pieces, rather than looking at 15 pieces.

ya that is where my head is at right now.... there is some pieces in my collection they will have to take out of my dead hands.... then there is some that i bought and never use.... so those are the pieces going bye bye when i can raise some funds to kick in with it.... I have had some cash crunch all summer long. I've been working OT at work on the weekends for the last month to help myself afford some concerts and weekend trips coming up. But once my cash crunch fades and it will, i will be in the postion to get something better to add to my collection.

Re: Higain amp suggestions Peavey/Marshall

anyone ever try out a Peavey JSX combo? The nearest Peavey dealer is 45 Minute drive for me so it can be hard to just drop in and try one when i see something on the web....

Re: Higain amp suggestions Peavey/Marshall

The JSX is an awesome amp, but it's not quite aggressive enough for me. YMMV.

5150 and XXX FTW!

Re: Higain amp suggestions Peavey/Marshall

I went shopping for Peavey amps with a friend not long ago and tried all their big heads, and he walked out with a XXX. I really wasn't expecting the XXX to stack up but it sounded better than both of them, it just really had instant usable sounds in it that just brought a smile to both our faces and made you want to keep playing it for hours!

The 6505 didn't sound that good to us even though we went there with the intention of walking out with one, and the JSX sounded okay but it really didn't have the character of the XXX. Usually I'd be one to recommend an EL34 amp over a 6L6 one but the XXX really stood out among those three.

Having said that, if you say you've got a 5150 and an 800...but you really want a mesa...I'd consider selling both those good heads and getting a mesa to really make you crazy happy! (or better still...an ENGL ;) )

The DSL might be good for something different too, it can be a pretty good sounding amp set up properly (I read that Trivium use them last night on their website...probably just live though). I've been impressed by DSL's lately, mostly when I went to see a local band and they had some very cool tone and saw that they were using DSL's.

If I had to choose I'd be getting a XXX though...lots of fun ;)

thanks for the info... i'll for sure have a look at the XXX.... Wish i could afford a Mesa... Never will happen... i do not wish to sell my 5150 stack or my JCM 800 head and i will not be able to raise Mesa Boogie Money on my own.. so i'm shooting lower

Re: Higain amp suggestions Peavey/Marshall

Well I think you need to stop getting caught up with the Mesa name...a 5150 or a XXX is nothing to sneeze at my friend, they will quite easily sound much better than a mesa, it just depends on who's playing through it ;)

Don't get me wrong.... one of the reasons i'm looking at getting another Peavey is because i love the ones i have.... c50, c30, 5150.... i just want to add another higain tube amp to my collection and use some SS stuff i own as a trade in... to be honest if i found a cheap used 5150 head locally i'd most likely be happy with a second 5150 head.... I love owning back ups!!! They hardly come up for sale used anymore... i missed buying a 2nd one for $500 Canadian a few years ago and have kicked myself since! But a huge part of me wants one of these new 3 channel amps...
