high end 4x12 cab shopping...

XSSIVE

OCDologist
i decided it was time to retire my '79 marshall 4x12 since it looks new but i feel bad beating the hell out of it with monster gain with tons of low end. plus it's not 100% the sound i want. i found my sound with a mix of a 5150 4x12 and a marshall vint. 30 loaded 4x12 at the same time...but there is no way i'm going to gig with 2 4x12 cabs...too much crap to move around...so i need one 4x12 do it all cab. i'm thinking i can go with a splawn or a voodoo, or a diezel cab or a bogner ubercab (this seems nice with the speaker match of 2 vint 30s 2 gt75s) or perhaps a mesa cab or another which seems nice the new engl XXL cab which looks great on paper like the bogner since they praise it's low end...but what the heck sets these cabs appart...for the most part they are all birch and loaded with celestions of some sort and in the $1k price range roughly. from the specs they only vary a bit in size for the most part...so what would work better for me? i find my marshall has a bit too much mid focus and not enough low end but the 5150 cab is a bit too mushy sounding but does have a decent low end with some amp tweeking but overall it sounds a bit muffled and not focused on its own...thus why the combo of the two worked great they filled eachothers gaps real well. so what cabs should i look at? no marshalls please since as i mentioned i found them to be a bit lacking in the low end. also since i'll be only using 1 4x12 cab should i shoot for a slant or will a straight cab be fine since most cabs i seem to like tend to be straight only...does it matter that much?

Re: high end 4x12 cab shopping...

If I was looking for a top end 4x12, I would look at Bogner and Splawn....no further. The only thing I dislike about Splawn is that they are only building straight cabs, not angled. I am a big fan of the angled. However, I have been to Scott's shop many times, and the stuff he builds is of OUTSTANDING quality....amazing sound.

Hello Jeff.....Hey buddy, did you get your Marshall amp problems all taken care of?

Re: high end 4x12 cab shopping...

thanks Jeff...that bogner ubercab with the 2 vint. 30s and 2 GT75s is tempting and one of my top picks so far since i think the GT75s may be a closer match to the sheffields in the 5150 and get me closer to that mixed sound that i want. but that new engl xxl cab is also tempting along with the splawn or voodoo option...argh...this is frustrating...i only want to do it once and get it right thus why i'm willing to spend the cash.

Re: high end 4x12 cab shopping...

I went to Voodoo amps and took my Mesa cab and compared it to the Voodoo cab. Even though the Voodoo had crappy g12t75 speakers it still smoked my Mesa. I will be getting Voodoo asap.

Re: high end 4x12 cab shopping...

what was so much better about it if it had "crappy" speakers in it?

Doug Roccaforte's cabs are supposed to be the shizzle. Note the fully framed interior.

Re: high end 4x12 cab shopping...

I really like my Orange PPC 412 (loaded with V30's).. seems to be a bit bigger than most 4x12's, and has more bass response as a result. Very heavy, but very solid cab.

Re: high end 4x12 cab shopping...

From all the high end cabs i tried when shopping for 1 last week i deffenitly liked the Bogner cabs best. I believe they use 18 ply baltic birch which shows because the cabs sides are very thick. I ended up taking home a oversized 2x12 cab loaded with V30's its only a lil bit smaller then most 4x12 and it sounds bigger and fuller then any other 2x12 out there. It actualy sounds different from other V30 loaded cabs as do the Bogner 4x12 ones. Dont know how they do it but they sound more "woody" and open then lets say a Mesa cab.
If you are in the market for a 4x12 I'd try a Bogner but you might also like VHT, they make some awsome cabs to! :)

Re: high end 4x12 cab shopping...

fatty...i was thinking about orange but it won't fit my style of metal and punk very well i don't think...the orange tolex i love it's the tan grillcloth that would just look odd with my head on it or any of the new heads i'm lookng at.

also does anyone know the difference b/t the voodoo cabs and splawn cabs? and which one you like over the other?

Re: high end 4x12 cab shopping...

ok...search is over i'm 90% set on a custom Splawn cab...

now next question...do i go with the standard splawn eminence X pattern of redcoat governors and redcoat g12t75s or do i spring for the celestion v30s and g12t75s for $100 more? doesn't matter to me price wise but which will hit the sound i want better...that's all i care about.

Re: high end 4x12 cab shopping...

I'd go with Eminence ;).

Most of the newer Celestions are made in China, not England. Eminence are 100% USA made, and sound ****ing killer!

Re: high end 4x12 cab shopping...

hmmm i never knew that...makes it a bit harder of a choice but i've always used celestions in that past...hmmm

SOME of the new Celestions are made in China, and I'd be willing to bet any amount of money that nobody here coudl tell the difference between a new made in England and a new made in China Celestion speaker!
