High Gain Stand Alone Overdrive Pedal?

All of the current overdrive pedals are of the "boost" flavor. I have a Tube Screamer which does that job fine. I would like a different flavor of pedal that will have enough gain by itself to sound good, but I don't want a buzzy distortion (DS-1) or fuzz.

Anyone have any suggestions? It's getting too expensive the keep buying and selling pedals to find one.

High gain and overdrive sort of contradict each other. But i say check out the new Mesa line of pedals or the offerings from Weehbo

Mesa Boogie Flux Drive, for medium gain.
Mesa Boogie Throttle Box, for high gain.

Caline Pure Sky, supposedly a Tim clone, it's sounds great, though, only $30 + shipping. True bypass, thick metal enclosure.

The same outfit also makes this one, the "Orange Burst", supposedly a BB Preamp clone. I prefer the Pure Sky, but I consider both awesome Tube Screamer alternatives, and they cost next to nothing.

In the past I would have suggested the EHX Soul Food, $65 + shipping, a Klon clone, but I can't say I've actually enjoyed using it half as much as these other pedals, mostly because of the aggressive tube-amp-wannabe mid range, but it's something to consider if you like the Klon sound.

Boss SD-2. People hate 'em. People love 'em. I love 'em!

I don't think anyone on this side of P&W music would consider any of those "high gain."

Re: High Gain Stand Alone Overdrive Pedal?

Oh and to the OP depending on your amp set up another option is to chain 2 overdrives together. Ive used 2 tubescreamers before. One of my favorite tones ever is an TS9 into an old chander tube driver into the front of my JMP with the gain on 6. 3 stages of low to mid gain adds to to hella brutal and tasty on the other end.

Re: High Gain Stand Alone Overdrive Pedal?

A big part of that will depend on what you mean by "high gain". For me, an OCD style pedal will more than cover my "high gain" needs but it won't even scratch the surface for someone into much heavier stuff.

Rivera metal shaman sounds killer...also I have a Krank distortus maximus that annihilates

More gain, and more modern sounding than its predecessor.

Re: High Gain Stand Alone Overdrive Pedal?

Looking into Catalinbreads stuff wouldn't hurt. I forget who makes the Sloika, but I really like that one too. Black Arts and Earthquaker make some good ones too.

off u see did MRSAge, I m on tapa talk and auto correct is hating on me

Re: High Gain Stand Alone Overdrive Pedal?

If you'd really like a high gain overdrive I can't think of a better one than the Lovepedal HiVolt. But for a more traditional distortion I'd go with a Wampler Triple Wreck or a Bogner Uberschall.

Re: High Gain Stand Alone Overdrive Pedal?

overdrive, well, i like to crank my Boss OD-3 (all knobs on 11) and modulate both tone and amount of gain from the guitar volume and tone knobs, i feel the thing alone has enough gain and punch, but take on mind that i use a Gibson DF on my V with .12 to .52 string gauge through an old peavey transtube (the thing LOVES to crunch cranked even on the clean channel, wich keeps cleaner than most tube amps clean but still crunches out!)

Re: High Gain Stand Alone Overdrive Pedal?

How could I left out the Rocktron Zombie Rectified Distortion? The manual says it works best with tube amp. It's not a hi-gain monster but since you says 'overdrive', I guess it qualifies.
