High power speakers VS. Low power speakers

Pros and cons of both? Better suited to what styles? I have a 100 watt cab now, and wondered if moving up in power might give me a better sound. Sometimes my rig can be a bit muddy if the volume gets too high. Don't know if that's a speaker headroom issue or not though.

Re: High power speakers VS. Low power speakers

hard to say specifically about your rig but in general higher wattage speakers are thicker sounding but stay tighter longer.

this 100w cab, what amp are you pushing it with? when you crank up the amp do you roll back the bass?

Re: High power speakers VS. Low power speakers

Splawn Quickrod. I've been running it at 50 watts.

The problem doesn't seem to be in the bass, it's a pretty bright amp anyway. There seems to be more of a high-end rolloff at higher volumes. So what was really punchy at lower volumes becomes somewhat muffled and middy sounding.

Re: High power speakers VS. Low power speakers

have you tried it with other cabs at about the same volume? tube amps tend to fatten up at higher volumes but so do speakers as they are pushed, at least until they start to get hit too hard

Re: High power speakers VS. Low power speakers

No, but that would be a fine idea. I might just try some higher-powered speakers and compare. More work to be done. :duck:
