Highest quality wood for good acoustic tone

Re: Highest quality wood for good acoustic tone

Solid Sitka or Engleman spruce top, solid rosewood back, with mahogany neck and either a rosewood or ebony fretboard. That combination, IMO, is the best

I'm starting to like Cedar tops on Mahogany backs as well, like some of the Taylors.

Most rosewood nowadays is Indian Rosewood, and I've come to love it's tone more than mahogany backs. Mahogany is brighter and punchier, but Indian Rosewood is punchy and warm and bigger sounding.

Spruce or brazilian rosewood?
it's not either / or

spruce is for tops, rosewood for the back and sides

another real popular combo is spruce top w/ maple back & sides.

Definitely a spruce top. My current favorite acoustic is my Guild D-40 with mahogany back/sides and a rosewood fingerboard. As much as I love this guitar, I must admit that I've been GASing for a D-55 with rosewood back/sides and ebony fingerboard. Obviously pre-Fender... I don't care at all for Guilds since the buyout.
