*bump* Any word on the Maximus? And what neck pup did you get to go with it?

I've still got quite a wait ahead of me. The earliest Jeff said to expect them is in August. I figure late August or early September if I'm lucky. Good things come to those who wait...

For the neck pickup, at Jeff's recommendation, I'm getting a 7.8k or so symmetrical wind, A4 magnet. Both the bridge and neck will be black/ivory zebra, 4 conductor. The Maximus will be 9.7k or so, A5 magnet.

They will eventually go in my yet-to-be-ordered or built Warmoth carved top Soloist. Yum yum. I hope to have the whole project completed around Christmas time.

I can't imagine stock Gibbys being anywhere near as good as Jeff's stuff...but to each his own.

Did i say they were nearly as good? I don't think so.

I said the stock Gibson pickups had feature that were a better fit in this axe because:

1. Color (my fault).
2. 4 conductor wiring (my fault).
3. I'm a Metalhead (my fault).

If I wasn't so anal about "OEM correctness" I'd put them in my 2002 Std. The Burstbucker Pro's still haven't done it for me (love the A2 BB's 1&2 in my R0). But this axe is still 100% original and in mint shape.

I've told Jeff already he's frickin' nuts doing such great work so cheap. You are nuts as well if you aren't charging more. I can think of a million better things to do with my time than spinning bobbins on a winder LOL!

The Burstbucker Pro's still haven't done it for me

Try getting all the poles flush, and then dropping the pups really low. Get your gain back with the amp. Worked well for me...at least much better than high and radiused.

Also, uncovered versions IME, are MUCH better.

I'll give it a try. I have tall historic pickup rings on now, so I'd have to go under the ring to get much lower. Not an issue, but it might look funny. If it sounds better, I'll go back to the stock rings.

Terry Kilgore who used to play with Dave Roth on "Your Filthy Little Mouth" is a pal, and he gave me a High Order pickup. It's a Zebra 8.5K AlNiCo 3. His exact words: "Prepare to be very happily surprised with this thing." Boy was he right! It's warm and clear with a tightness that's really musical.
Seems to me like it's "more everything" no matter what guitar you install it in.

To me, this is one of those pickups that belongs in the "too good to be true" category. First place I installed it was in the Bridge of my B.C. Rich ST3. Absolutely great there. I gotta say, I've been able to nail some scary EVH tones with this pickup in that guitar, and while it does the EVH vibe really well, I like it even more because I feel like I'm getting closer to the tone I want for ME.

It's now in the bridge position of my Ibanez Artist reissue (AR-200, the Korean one), with a Duncan Jazz in the neck (when I wanna pretend I'm Frank Marino or early EVH) OR I switch it up: the High Order in the neck position neck with an old Gidson Dirty FIngers in the bridge (when I wanna pretend I'm John Sykes! LOL) Needless to say, I need to get another Ibanez Artist so that my poor soldering iron can get a break!

I'm in love with it because it has balls and clarity at the same time, breaks out the whoopass when distorted, sings like an Angel when clean, and harmonics FLY outta this thing. Has the tone of a idealized sweet PAF with the harmoncs of a DiMarzio FRED. In other words, it's sweet, but will bare it's fangs on command.

You do NOT have to fight this pickup. It's as if it's asking you "Where would you like to go now?"

Another thing worth mentioning is that the quality of construction on this pickup is FLAWLESS!

I have had 3 of Jeff's pickups for years now and just did get my fourth one in the mail yesterday.
Jeff's pickups fantastic, and the price he does them for is so low it almost seems like a crime not to get them!

I have:
a13K ceramic wind he originally did for Terry Kilgore
an 8.7 K neck pickup
a Maximus wind that is currently in my Les Paul
and just did get an overwound 8.9 PAF wind that's going in where the Maximus currently is.

The Maximus is one hard rocking pickup so I wanted something a little milder, through my setup the Maximus is almost like Judas Priest in a pickup!

Great stuff indeed. I have the 8.5/7.8 A2 in my LP and I love them. Very clear and articulate. They crunch very well too. I was worried about flubby bass with the A2 on the bridge....not so!

My SG has an A2 in the stock bridge pickup. It's the tightest sound I own.

This is me with a band I was in using a Schecter Blackjack with some of Jeff's pickups (Tubetramp wind and the 8.7K neck). I was amazed at how great they sounded coil tapped.

I communicated with him a few years ago and he actually helped me figure out that I wasn't looking for what I thought I was looking for. He basically said "I will be happy to build you this pickup but I don't think it is what you want" and he was right. That impressed me, since he cost himself an order.

Wow, 15 year old thread.

I've been aging my double whites under a florescent lamp for months. It's a slow-go. Trying to get a bone white instead of bright white. Still haven't given these pickups a fair shot yet.

Here's my latest from Jeff, an 8.8K hot PAF wind. He surprised me with the gold pole pieces. I asked for them, he answered back later saying he didn't think they were a go (supplier quality issues) and then it got here!

I made the mistake of seeing an Epiphone Limited Edition Blackback Les Paul and have wanted to do the same hardware on my blonde LP ever since. I really dig the way those open top pickup covers look.

I have those on an 80s Burny LPC. Only the screws are gold though, not the slugs.
