These used to be really talked about amps, but I do not see many posts about them here at amplifier central. Does anybody own one? How do you like it.

Re: Hiwatt amps

I played on several back in the day. Never owned one. (My preference back then was for combos with reverb. They were expensive, too.)

Some impressions burned into my memory:

Very loud.
Very clean at high volume.
Very well built. Just super clean and neat inside.
Excellent cabinet work.

The original designer died, and the quality fell off--at least for a while. Haven't played one for a long time. The big comparision is to Marshalls--they sound similar, but the Marshall always seemed more organic, less hi-fi.

That's what I remember about Hiwatt.

Re: Hiwatt amps

Huge, clean, loads of depth and power, detailed, the build quality is a benchmark(old ones that it is) very good foundation for all kinds of sounds.
Sounds good all by it self or with pedals.
Works well with a wide array of speakers.
Only amp I really like both loud and turned down.

Re: Hiwatt amps

+1 to everythig said so far. Original Hiwatts are basically "the" benchmark for build quality. I used to own a 70's DR-103, and hold it alone responsible for the tinitus in my right ear.

Here is my 81 in action. A DR504. Had wanted one forever, traded a Plexi RI which I loved for it. No regrets, it is exactly what I hoped it would be. I tweaked it to early DR504 specs, as there was a gain boost they put in the later amps. I also lowered the value of the resistors off of the input jacks, to fatten the sound a bit. I use the low gain input, and this live clip has a Rocktron Big Crush comp on the front end.
