Hiwatt vs Marshall

Re: Hiwatt vs Marshall

"Built using Partridge transformers, 4 x ECC-83 tubes in the preamp section, 4 x EL-34 tubes in the power stage, and is rated at 100 watts output, with switchable 4, 8 & 16 ohms impedance."

.... mmmm ..... patridge tranny four ECC 83s, four EL34 I bet if you push it with MXR+ type of pedal it will get you a gorgeous crunch.
I think a good example of this is The Who doing Don't Know Myself at the IoW Festival. Nicely clean for the most part with a slight edge, then about midway through the song, at the end of the chorus, he turns up volume up a bit and it has this perfectly crunchy overdrive without being too heavy.

Since October 2004 I've been a firm believe iin the Gibson/Hiwatt combo.

Re: Hiwatt vs Marshall

Don't believe everything you read. Music Ground is notorious for bending the truth. They are not partridge trannies. They are partridge clones. They try to copy David Reeves classic circuits, but the wiring job is not up to David's or Harry Joyce's standards.

MG paints a fantastic picture, but only makes an average amp.

Gilmour's amps only have the inputs linked. I am pretty certain that "bypassing the preamps" is out of date info.

Any 1970's DR504 or DR103 will get you there.

Re: Hiwatt vs Marshall

I finally got to play a hiwatt the other day and it was truly amazing. I also am a huge gilmour fan. I have to say, it kicks the crap out of a marshall, depending on what you want. Certain marshalls have great overdrive sounds but not much in the way of clean. Hiwatts have great cleans, definately up there with fender cleans and if you really crank it you can get some good distortion too.

I played the studio/stage combo that can switch between 20 and 40 watts. It had a push/pull preamp volume pot to give you good distortion at lower volumes as well. that model is is pretty pricey though. The new high gain series would be the best value because they still have the hiwatt clean channel as well as a higher gain distortion channel and it is cheaper than most hiwatts.

As far as other people that played them i think that at one point alex lifeson of rush played them and i believe that martin barre of jethro tull played them as well.

Re: Hiwatt vs Marshall

Reeves Amps are really excellent. If I was looking for a new HIWATT amp, I would buy a Reeves in a heartbeat. They put much more attention and care into their amps and the construction of their amps, than Music Ground.

The Reeves Vintage Purple speaker is much closer to a 1970's Fane than the new production Fanes used by MG. Fane Acoustics Ltd. lost all the data sheets from the 1970's and don't seem interested in trying to reproduce the legendary speakers they worked so hard to create in the late 1960's for David Reeves. Bill Jansen the President and Owner of Reeves Amplification, took an early 1970's cast frame Fane to Eminence and after several attempts they made an incredible replica. I own several of the original Fanes and I am a big fan of the new Reeves Vintage Purple speaker. They really are great!

MG may not be a Lie, as you put it. But No one could do any more to damage their reputation than they have themselves.

Bill will be at the Vintage HIWATT Ampfest and Convention, June 23-24, with amps to demo.

Re: Hiwatt vs Marshall

So, the Reeves are cheaper, better build quality, and sound more like a real vintage Hiwatt? **** yeah.

I'm savin' up the $1900 for a Reeves CP504 and then whatever is need for a 2x12 cab w/ Vintage Purples.

Yes, Yes and Yes.

Re: Hiwatt vs Marshall

I've always known Hiwatt to be a very clean but LOUD amp but when you finally crank it, it has a very signature distortion, much like the Orange.

Pretty much sums it up as far as I know. But I don't have too much experience.

Re: Hiwatt vs Marshall

First off, if you dont like The Who then there's probably something wrong with your ears anyway.
This man speaks the truth. The Who have something for everyone. You want R&B? Pick up Odds and Sods and listen to the first 3-4 songs. You want psychedelic? Pick up The Who Sell Out. Funk? Eminence Front. Hard Rock? Any of their live albums. Etc...

Not to get off topic, anyone try those Hiwatt Bulldog's?
Haven't heaard much, other than them being complete and utter trash. :)

Didn't Music Ground UK make the Reeves amps at one point? i know a guitarist that is sponcered by the UK Hiwatt and they say the Reeves were made by Music Ground with a different label.... I assume this is either false info or Reeves is now making their own amps...

Re: Hiwatt vs Marshall

Yes, almost exactly two years ago Reeves amps were simply rebadged MG HIWATTs. Since the summer of 2005 all Reeves Amps have been built in Cincinatti. Reeves also has several new original models available.

Re: Hiwatt vs Marshall

being a massive Who fan i've always had this crazy idea to have Pete's stage set up from the 75 American Tour... 7 Hiwatt cabs-(6 behind him and 1 on johns side of the stage... a reverb unit, a rack EQ, a few pedals like the Fuzz and Dynacomp.... and a bunch of LP Goldtops.... and maybe a few modded LP's like he started using in 1976 with the middle Pickup.... crazy man!!!!

Of course that is just a pipe dream... for myself i have to be more carefull with money and buy only what i could really use instead of a massive rig menat to kill ear drums....
