im working on my cousins guitar, a fatstrat copy no name brand, but he wants my ibanez GRX. ive been thinking about offering him a trade for the ibanez, which is pretty much stock, except for one pup i replaced.
i could give it the old fender makeover. only thing i would have do is new tuners, new pickguard, and replace the bucker with a single coil and make a regular 3 coil strat.
think it would be worth it? i have no idea what kinda wood this thing is made of but the thing plays really great for a $100 guitar. and it would be a fair trade for trade for the GRX...well a little generous on my part:smack: ... but i have no use for it.

any way if i do this, when i change the single coils, should i get the ones with staggered pole pieces or flush pole pieces? would that make any huge difference in the sound? the 2 singles that are on it now have flush mounted pole pieces.

Re: hmm....should i do it??

I'm partial to staggered poles. Some people say that flats have a bit less high end presence than the staggered pickups.

your going to keep the custom, right?

i'd do it but keep the custom

I agee, keep your custom if you do decide to trade your cousin. Also, I wouldn't mod his guitar if its only worth 100 bucks. Spending money on modding materials for a guitar thats only worth $100.00 isn't at all worth it in my book. I got a Washburn BT-3 which was my first guitar. The action on it sucks, and the single coils in it are thin sounding and are garbage. Theres really nothing good about the guitar except for it's Grover tuners, which is why I'll never put out any kind of money to modd it. I just keep it around for a spare guitar because its not sellable.

I disagree. If the guitar is a decent axe already, mod away. If it plays like garbage and can't be fixed with a setup, don't. Just because a guitar costs $100 does not automatically make it "junk." There is some truth to the adage, "you get what you pay for;" however, it is NOT absolute.

Does this one have it's limitations? OF course. It's a Squier Strat (or was). But it played well and sounded good already. Now it plays well and sounds great.

Just my .02.

I agree with Les. I've got two J. Reynolds strats, that are the best playing guitars I've ever played. Not even a MIA strat can hold a flame to these two. Basswood body, crappy hardware. 300 bucks into a 99 dollar guitar = the two best damn strats anyone has ever played. Even if they are ugly.
