well, i was set on an xxx, then my friend brought over his 5150 & I'm LOVING the tone when im plugged into the high gain input, rythm channel, crunch off, and preamp gain maxed...and bright switch off. Infact its the perfect distortion. So i talked to the guy, asked him what he retubes it with, and his answer was groove tubes, infact pretty much the same exact ones i have in my hrdx, well, powers are the same, pres i can't remember but im sure they were close.


But, this amp has no clean channel, which is gonna bug me at some point, and i also really dug the ultra channel on the xxx when it was set on loose, so this made me think, there must be SOME way to coax 5150 1 sounds out of an xxx, more specifically the one im using, and after i retubed it with these tubes I'd have the 5150 sound i loved, a fendery clean, and the ultra channel...which can only improve cuz i love these tubes.

So is my assumption right? I mean with the damping switch & new tubes there should be a way to get that 5150 sound from the xxx, correct?


I think my ideal amp WOULD be the xxx if it had all those things, and it'd prolly be the most realistic starting point

this will be a bit vague since i don't know myself but when i was talking to Scott (wattage) the other day he mentioned he plays through a XXX that he changed the tubes in to change the sound up. try asking him what he thinks, he may be able to let you know what his tube changes did to the amp and how it reacts now etc...

It's hard to really get those sounds out of an XXX, but it's possibly. Just give it a try. Tube changes affect this amp a ton, too.

The 5150 and XXX are voiced differently, so I don't think your gonna get it 'exact' by changing tubes. Why not just run and A/B pedal between the Fender you own and the 5150? That's basically what I do with no problems. I use the Whirlwind A/B box to get the best of both worlds, so to speak.

the XXX amp can run either 6L6's or EL34's, and the 5150 only uses 6L6's so if you used them in the XXX, you might get closer to it.

I agree, the JSX might be a better bet for you. Of course, it's a bit more expensive than a used 5150, but it can cover a much wider range of tones.

well i found its actually really hard to get hi-gain sounds out of the jsx, so i don't think that would work

What the hell? Hard to get high gain tones out of a JSX? Are you mad?

That amp sounds wonderful, and get's high gain easily! Just use the red channel, even the amber channel has a decent amount of gain. Chris Amott of Arch Enemy uses one on tour, there's no way that thing has low distortion. Both the guitarists in The Haunted used one on rEVOLVEr, as well.

hm, well i only tried it for like 15 mins, but if, after retubing, it can give me all those tones, then I'm sold on it

so can anyone verify that?
