thought i'd share that i never liked my JB much, until today...

i had problems of the JB sounding thin and brittle, which isn't a pleasant tone as most of you should know. yesterday i read in another thread that the JB sounds best at about 1/16th of an inch from the strings. now, my JB is 1/16th inch from the strings and matched with a 250k volume. all i can say is HOLY SHIT! what an amazing tone, and this is from a Peavey Bandit as well :saeek:

i'm even able to add mids on my distorted channel and not sound like a sterile old fart (no offence elders, its just an expression :laugh2: )

later dudes, i'm gonna go play :headbang:

Re: ho-ly crap!

mine is so near the strings the strings are almost touching the pup when fretted at the 22nd fret.. paired with a 9-46 set of strings it can growl like no other

Re: ho-ly crap!

hehe. that's cool. i first thought the JB has no punch in palm mutes. Than i raised the pu height and voila every problem was solved. Fat palm mutes like never before ;)
my actual setup is about 1mm between polepiece and string 500k vol no tone ctrl.. 10-46 for standard E and F. I could imagine thinner strings would be to bright

Is the "Bandit" an amp, or a guitar? ;)

BTW - As an "old fart", no offense taken.

As "sterile" . . . give me 5 minutes with your "girlfriend" . . . she'll forget who you are. ;)

Re: ho-ly crap!

That's cool bro! I actually found I prefer the 500k pots with the JB big time.....really opened up the tone! I had it in three guitars. I also had it about 1/16" from the strings. I always hear problems any closer though.

Since then I replaced my JBs with the Rio Grande BBQ. :wow: The BBQ is like a fatter BQ......I can't get enough and prefect like the JB with 500k pots.

Most all my pups are about 1/16" if not a hair closer. I don't hear those Wolfe notes or having the tuning issues people speak of........after talking to some experienced people, that is more a single coil issue as with Strats. I also find little difference in radiusing the poles as I actually find the tone fatter and more pleasing with them flush. Another tip I got from some seasoned players.

Re: ho-ly crap!

I posted this before, but you guys may wanna try it. When I built my Tele-Gib, I read Seymour's story on it. He mentioned on the JB, he found it sounded better with all the poles raised with the BOTTOM of the screwHEADS flush with the top of the bobbin. So looking from the side, you'll just see the 'mushroom' heads bottoms (the flat underside) sitting flush with the bobbin. You'll need to lower your pups first, then raise 'em to where you like, I like it close too. This made a big difference to me, as I used the JB with the standard center raised poles matched to the radius, I just happened to re-read the Tele-Gib story and caught this tip I missed.

wow man, this added quite a bit of clarity, and improved the tone even more :saeek:

whatever would i have done without you here? :D

Re: ho-ly crap!

Who would have thought a screwdriver is the secret to better tone? Glad you like the improvements...I did the same to my Jazz neck BTW...I did lower the overall height a bit more though.

I'll give this a try. I dunno if i understand it right, but it looks very ugly with the polepieces that way.
Gonna check it at rehearsel ...

Re: ho-ly crap!

marcel wasn't that my thread;) and yea it brought my JB to a new level of sound

edit-i'm not exactly sure if i follow what your suggesting butnut

Re: ho-ly crap!

hehe i had it this way before but now i have it a bit more extreme....
*EDIT*
i check it out thru my rig and it sounds killer. I'm not sure if much better because i didn't have the old in my ear, but i think so. If I'm right: a bit more punch, tightness, sound was in your face better palm mutes...
I always like it if tweaking seems to be succesfull... ;)
btw i'm still not sure if i understand butnut right, but i guess
but thx for that tip butnut...

Re: ho-ly crap!

I'll try explain a bit more...the screws HEADS are 'dome shaped' viewed from the side, like a mushroom cap. The threads are like the stem. Turn each screw counteclockwise to RAISE each HEAD. You don't wanna see any threads...just enough until the bottom of the head (the FLAT part) is level with the TOP of the bobbin plastic. Don't raise it so high you'll have little mushrooms sticking out, only the HEADS are raised, you won't see any screw threads.
OK, final tweak I forgot to mention, I angle the screw SLOTS in a pattern. This was from an old GP article from Dan Erlewine when he visited Gibson. Each screw slot, after height is set is angled this way (view from top) / \ / \ / \ something about pattern and the string over it. Good luck and have fun, tweak away.

Unfortunately, all those silly comments I made were post-Crabshack!

Thus making your "senile" comment, on the money. :laugh2:
