Hollow vs Semi- Hollow.

Re: Hollow vs Semi- Hollow.

My '68 330 is crunchy and aggressive sounding. My 333 and my cousin-in-law's '68 345 that I had for years were creamier and bassier, and you had to play them harder to get them to cut through in the mix like the 330 does quite easily. But a large part of that probably had to do with the pickups each guitar had. Humbuckers in the semi hollows, and P90's in the fully hollow one. Really hard to compare if both don't have the same pickups.

Pickups aside - My experience exactly - I have to play my Starfire much harder (focused technique) to get the acoustic tone cut the 330 delivers naturally. A semi is a much stiffer guitar. The 330 flexes and breathes with tremendous resonance. The 330 has made my semi playing better because I end up trying to replicate it's resonance and cut which has improved my technique and acoustic tone with the Starfire. If you don't rely on the center block for your tone you can get them to talk like acoustics. It takes time to find the acoustic sweet spot on a semi and play there. I start my practice unplugged until I have the resonance.

They are 2 completely different animals - I grew up playing acoustics so a 330 is natural to me. I enjoy playing a semi because it is so frigging strong.

Re: Hollow vs Semi- Hollow.

i had a 66 Casino. It was a lot of fun to play and so resonsive, but a lot more prone to feedback than the 335, and nowere near as much bass as the 175. The p90's sounded cool tho. So light and fun. Really hard tho to compare a thinline semi, to a thinline hollow and a full size hollow. They all have their place.

ySo why did you sell Casino if it was so much fun to play with ?

Re: Hollow vs Semi- Hollow.

cos the 335 was more useful for what i needed.
The 330 is fun, but it doesnt sustain like a 335, and it fed back too easily. Nor did it have the fat sound of the 175. I cant afford to have heaps of guitars in a collection, so i just keep the ones i can use for work.

Re: Hollow vs Semi- Hollow.

My Heritage 330 hollow body (well actually they call it a 530) will howl like a banshee when amplified if your'e not careful. But, Ted Nugent made a living screeching that Byrdland! The 330 has a very open tone to it with those P90's in it, amp not turned up bleeding loud. To my ears, it's almost into the acoustic realm but not quite.

Actually Ted got his Byrdlands to roar like a lion back in the Amboy Duke days, with low octave feedback. Listen to the original studio version of 'Baby Please Don't Go' for a great example of that. Raw brute power that hits you in the gut. Nothing schreechy about it.
