NOS and Mullards, there is less and less of them right? so do any of you have a stash of these and just use them for recording and use other, JJ, EHs, GrooveTubes, for giging and practice?

Re: Holy Chaimber of Tubes ?

I have a stash of 1950's blackplate RCA 12AX7's and 6V6's, and a stash of early 60's Mullard ECC83's (12AX7's) and I use them nearly every day in my amps, just as the God of Amplification intended. I carry a set of EH 6V6's in my Super Champ as spares, to be used only in a case of absolute emergency. For my EL34 amps, I have settled with SED Svetlana's, because Mullards are just too hard to find and afford. I started hunting and gathering in 2003, and have what I hope to be a lifetime's supply. The only moment which exists is now, so that's when I want excellent tubes in my amps.

Aha .... so what do you think are the fair prices for say 100 60's Mullard ECC83's and say 50 EL34s ?

Re: Holy Chaimber of Tubes ?

Whoa there....you either

a) Have 20 different amps

b) Expect to live to the age of 400

c) Know somebody whose got a massive box of classic old tubes

Early 60's Mullard ECC83's in good used (90%+) condition should be around US$25 - $35. Best buys are those rebranded for Fisher, Knight, Delco, Eico, Dynaco, etc. The rebrands are generally cheaper because the collectors don't want them if they don't say "Mullard." As long as they are from the Blackburn plant (Letter "B" in the date code) and they are pre IEC (pre 1966) then they are the right stuff.

There are no fair prices on Mullard EL34's, unless option "C" above is the case. EL34's were the first vintage tubes to be used up by all the Marshall guys in the 70's and 80's. Now, they are prohibitively expensive and very difficult to find. Finding a dozen matched quads of old Mullard EL34's is unlikely to occur, again, unless we're looking at option "C."

Japanese collectors got onto this concept about 15 years ago, and they have stockplied a substantial amount of the tubes which were available then, the very best stuff, and they will drip feed it back into the market when the supplies on eBay finally dwindle. By that time, the prices will probably be silly.
