Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

I used to keep them on stands, but our male Chihuahua took to marking them out of the blue. I don't have a dedicated music room in this house to close off and I like to have my few nice ones out. Thus the idea to hang them.

I'm going to install a 1x8 screwed to the studs and then rehang. At least that way they won't rip out of the wall. No earthquakes in San Antonio, so I'm safe from that.

All min are screwed to studs wit long drywall screws
Not the ones included

I do have two that are anchored with the drywall anchors included

Those get the lightweight acoustics

If my wife's chihuahua lives half that long, I will go crazy. Loving little dude, until I get close to her. Then he acts like he wants to eat my face off.

Exactly how our male is. Either my wife alone or me alone with him and he is a lover. If he is laying with her, especially in bed, he turns into a complete Cujo if I even look in her direction. I think he started peeing on my guitars to get back at me for not running away from the bed when he goes bezerkers. Lil' bastard, but I wouldn't trade him. He has been the best companion for my wife, especially when she was first really sick and my job had me on the road all the time. She says he saved her life during that time and I believe it.

He turn turned 13 this past September. We've had him since he was 10-12 weeks. Dogs are great and worth the trouble, even when they pee on your guitars..... hence the hanging to get back on topic.

Wow crazy! I have mine on the same hangers! Mine are all into the studs, except rather than use the screws that come packaged with the hangers I used 3" wood screws so I know they're at least 1.5" into the stud on the other side.

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

Glad that LP is ok.

As far as storing guitars, the only one of mine that stays in a case is the '62 LP. Everything else is always out on a stand, and I have 4 kids. If I only played when it was worth going to the trouble of getting them out of the cases, I'd never get to. However, I do keep the Dot and Epiphone LP safely behind the Strats.

Once we get rid of our piano, I'm intending to hang them in it's place. At that time, even the '62 will go caseless. The wall I'm using is painted paneling, but I still intend to fix a board to the studs and attach hangers to that.

Incidentally, I went to see Noam Pikelny (killer progressive banjo player) last year. During his show, in addition to banjo, he plays a variety of guitars. Beforehand, his assistant setup all the guitars on stage, one of which was an old blackguard Telecaster. The Tele fell off the stand, crashing on its face. The assistant picked it up, strummed it a few times, wiggled the tuners and spun the knobs back and forth, shrugged, then put it back on the stand.

I now have a dedicated guitar room (both kids grown) and I’m fortunate to have such. My dogs were always respectful but my cats would try to freaking nest in my combo amps. Bastards.

I have a dedicated guitar room. My four "best" are in cases, and it's not rough or inconvenient to use thirty seconds to take them out. The other kick-around are on a seven guitar stand. If the dogs defiled my guitars (or anything else) they'd live outside.

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

In my almost 40 years of guitars the “what if” always kept me from hanging mine.

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

I used to have a room full of guitar hangers until I remodeled it and decided not to have a million things hanging on the walls. Now they are mostly in cases.

Wow man, just reading it has ME amped up!!!!!!

Glad it all turned out OK.

How is the floor?

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

For the "I'd never hang a guitar" and "Hanging does not make sense" people...

What's it like being dumb enough to that and shameless enough to actually post it?

Hanging makes TOTAL EFFING SENSE!!!!!!!!

- Ever been to a guitar store? ever seen one fall? No. Point hanging.
- Aren't guitars beautiful, and artistic in many cases? Yes. Point hanging.
- Does hanging keep them from being knocked over by pedestrian traffic? Yes. Hat trick for HANGING.
- They get knocked around? No they don't unless you try to shoot free throws into the hanger, or hang them with .001mm between guitars.
- If you are in a flood zone - does it not help them stay safe? Another point for hanging!

Doors slamming into them? If you are too stupid not to hang them behind a door you are too stupid play guitar. I can go on all day.

Caveat; I fully concur with an ultra-high value investment/collection type instrument. And if it is in an earthquake zone. Other than that....

Hang it and hang it right.

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

Full disclosure:

3 in cases: All epic Les Pauls
11 on stands: 1 LP studio, 2 basses, an Epic, and 4 acoustics
6 hanging on serious stud mounts: Cadillacs/V's
7 on hangers of questionable durability: cheap@$$ Superstrats, and over a stuffed couch and carpeted floor

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

Im soooo happy for you!!! Id have had a stroke... Funny... Ive had issues that I was SURE the guitar woulda been damaged and it wasnt.. Then piddy stuff that you wouldnt think would hurt a thing, and had dents or dings.. go figure..

Seen people do it. Again a "not my guitar, not my problem" sort of thing, but if it can prevent any amount of attrition of cool guitars, then I can safely claim "doors" as a reason to recommend against hanging guitars; if only because a lot of people are apparently not smart enough to think about it first.

Also, Guitar Center hanging axes from the walls, and 75% of them having some sort of damage, is not a good argument. Not saying it's always because of hanging; still, a really crappy argument.

In practice, aside from outright damage I know the things I hate most about leaving a guitar out in the open (whether on a stand or hanging precariously from the wall) are: Fading. Dust. Premature string corrosion depending on your local climate. That annoying sticky feeling when it's a guitar that isn't frequently played. I really just don't get it.
