Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

For the "I'd never hang a guitar" and "Hanging does not make sense" people...

What's it like being dumb enough to that and shameless enough to actually post it?

Hanging makes TOTAL EFFING SENSE!!!!!!!!

- Ever been to a guitar store? ever seen one fall? No. Point hanging.
- Aren't guitars beautiful, and artistic in many cases? Yes. Point hanging.
- Does hanging keep them from being knocked over by pedestrian traffic? Yes. Hat trick for HANGING.
- They get knocked around? No they don't unless you try to shoot free throws into the hanger, or hang them with .001mm between guitars.
- If you are in a flood zone - does it not help them stay safe? Another point for hanging!

Doors slamming into them? If you are too stupid not to hang them behind a door you are too stupid play guitar. I can go on all day.

Caveat; I fully concur with an ultra-high value investment/collection type instrument. And if it is in an earthquake zone. Other than that....

Hang it and hang it right.
Exactly. I find when they live in cases they tend never to come out for exercise. If my guitars are easily accessible (like I just have to reach up and grab one) they get played. As soon as things get put away it becomes a bother to pull them out (cause you're gonna have to put it all away again afterward).

At the age of 29 (I was 5), I can still remember the 6.7 Northridge earthquake that rocked So Cal. I envy all of those who can hang up their guitars. Even bolt-on guitars are a no go for me. I wish I could do it in peace.

Glad the LP is okay. You definitely cashed in some luck.

Hanging guitars on the wall is a dumbass move in the first place. LIke tossing a newborn in the air, it's gonna fall sooner or later.

You should at least have a wall of bricks and cement, and a dynabolt
images

You must be joking? Never had a problem in my life doing it. I'd say it's not for all situations though,,,,,but in others it's just fine.

Good proper wood screws in good wood is better than anything in brick or cement that could crack and/or crumble.

Hang it and hang it right.

I'll add just one more benefit, although it's a minor convenience really.

I have one of my two Hercules metal three-screw hangers (they're flush also, so the whole screw's length buried) on the pedal/plug-in side of my amp so that when I take a break or need to have my hands for a moment I can hang it right up without unplugging the cable. So handy. Most stands require that you unplug. It's more of a staging area really, so all I have to do is grab the guitar and play.

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

Jeff, first let me say how sorry I am that you had that misfortune. I'm glad that the damage wasn't severe.

I've got over 50 guitars and nearly 30 of them are on the wall and over a dozen are on floor stands. The ones on the wall are MUCH safer than the ones on the floor! Some hangers are screwed into studs but most are just in the sheetrock using those large white plastic screw-in anchors. I don't just have my cheap guitars on the hangers either, but some very valuable collector's guitars (unplayed '57 Strat 50 year commemorative, limited edition-run of 400 Gibson LP, '67 or '68 made-in-Kalamazoo Sheraton, Custom Jazz bass, Rickenbacker, etc). I have never had the slightest problem with any of them! If the hangers are done properly, you WON'T have a problem. I don't care that you say your dad is a contractor and he did it with his "seal of approval"...HE SCREWED UP!! Or he used the wrong size anchor. Or he didn't pre-drill the sheetrock with a 1/4" hole before screwing in the anchors (if you just punch and screw-in the anchor like the directions usually say, you will tear the backing paper on the sheetrock or crumble the rock inside. The paper on the back of the rock is the most critical part to maintain for strength and support).

Every guitar store I've ever seen has hundreds of guitars hanging on the walls and stupid customers yanking them off and slamming them back onto the hangers all day long and I've never heard of them just "falling off" by themselves.

I only wish I had more wall space to get some of my guitars off of the floor and up where they are safe, can be more easily admired, and where they are more accessible for easy grabbing and playing.

Yes, a 1x8" screwed into studs and guitar hangers screwed into the 1x8" would be very secure (again, if done properly), but it is overkill and usually very ugly.

& if for some reason your LP does fall ..sell it as "relic'd" for a couple of hundred more than you bought it :bigthumb:

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

I’m with the people who say it’s perfeclty safe to hang guitars. As already mentioned, stores do it with without failure. It’s not like they go and store every single guitar in their cases when the work day is over, only to reset up the next day.

I’ve never had one fail on me and I’ve done it for over 10 years, but as Lew mentioned, it has to be done properly. Studs are almost never situated where I need/want my guitars to be, so I use the screw in type anchors but make sure to have a good starter hole so the insert doesn’t rip it’s way through, it should bite right away on the threads and then feel as if the insert can’t move at all once it’s fully in place. If you feel it can wiggle or still turn when your flush, then it didn’t bite properly and it WILL fail at some point. I’ve had anchors so tight and secure that I would have to rip it out by force when I wanted to uninstall them. You also can’t use whatever screw, it has to be the proper diameter to ensure maximum grip of the threads into the insert.

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

Like Boogie Bill said, the safest place in is the case.

In 50 years of playing, I have never hung one of my guitars on a wall, I take them out their case to play and when I'm done, they get wiped down and put away. I am very glad that yours was not terribly damaged in the descent.

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

To reiterate: Guitars at stores are usually in such poor shape it's impossible to say how much & whether hanging contributed to the damage. So I wouldn't use their example as a preface toward hanging being "safe."

Unlike a guitar store, in my house, I'll smack your dumb @$$ for trying to touch one without permission. So again - random idiots (other than yourself) treating them badly is a personal choice. No-issue.

And if you think they will bang them hanging them - they will also drop them trying to use a stand.

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

So you have 27 guitars? Man, and my wife thinks I have a problem lol

Well, I mean, yeah....I'm in a hair band. So, like I NEED the neon yellow one, and the V, and V with a chic graphic, and like, I need them. Sorry Keep just mostly uses a Tele and a 335.....

Bonamassa said, "Never hang a guitar by the headstock. Would you like to be hung by your head?" Funny I thought but it made sense to me.

That's only because he doesn't have an endorsement for a Bonamassa Hanger.

It's like respecting gravity. You're free to disrespect one of the few fundamental forces of the universe, of course. But when you tell gravity "**** you," gravity usually replies, "No: **** *you.*"

Question, Ace: Why don't you hang your "nice" Les Pauls?

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

Glad your guitar is ok.

I wouldn’t trust a hollow wall anchor into drywall to hang a guitar hanger on.

It’s only as strong as the 1/2” drywall it’s screwed into...and that’s not very strong. Drywall crumbles easily and those anchors loosen up.

I use those String Swings and I first located the 2 x4 studs, made sure they were all there behind the drywall every 16”, laid it all out, tested to be sure with a nail and hammer for each one, and then screwed the String Swing Hangers to the wall...every 16”.

Works fine for Solid bodies. A little tight, but doable, with dreadnaught size acoustic guitars.

Strange that I can sort of afford the guitars, but not the cases . . . I suck at budgeting

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

If my wife's chihuahua lives half that long, I will go crazy. Loving little dude, until I get close to her. Then he acts like he wants to eat my face off. I can't help it. My Chi is female to eliminate the piss problem. She is a great guard dog (alarm, no bite), and she sleeps with me all night, and day if she has to. I too, have to spend a lot of time inbed and live alone. She's MY lifesaver. Thank got they live 15 years so I don't have to get another dog. I used to hate Chis, till someoneone dumped her on me. I cured of shaking and all neuroses except separation anxiety. AND NOW, BACK TO YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAM

Re: Holy Hell - My Les Paul Just Fell Off The Wall

Yup, as mentioned the horizontal board drilled into the framing studs is the way to go.
Glad she’s ok.

Thanks for that. That is what I was thinking. I'll never find the post, but the guy replied to me asking about studs. He showed me a wall of mandolins to teles, hung every which way, and said "Does that look like studs matter?" Then he showed me a pic of a pak of screws that said "WallMates". Looked like sheet rock screws to me. Against everybody's advice, if I decide to murder (hang) mine, would you suggest those funny lookin screws that have plastic (I know, I know) that expands after being screwed in? Damn I came here to compare 2 guitars.

Several years ago my wife bought me a few wall hangers for my guitars but I haven’t had the balls to use them. Personally, I wouldn’t dare hang my guitars without making certain I could drill the horizontal board into wall studs.
If you’re dead set on hanging yours, I’d suggest buying a stud finder at your local hardware store.
Those screws with the plastic expansion pieces may be fine for hanging a picture on your wall, but I’d never trust a valuable instrument to them.
