Home Brew amp pic's

you get the stuff out of a kit, or just get the parts list off ax84, also the guy that did the chasis, he have a website?

I bought the parts kit from the site. I'm too lazy to source every single part in that amp. That chassis was part of the kit but I had to drill and cut all the holes. It's just a Hammond enclosure. 16" wide by 2" high by 8" deep. It's still a lot of work to lay out the thing even though you get all the parts.

It really does sound cool. There are sound clips on the site and that's what made me build one. I couldn't believe the tone. It's really a shredder's amp. Pure tube tone.

The two preamp tubes on the right are JJ's version of the 12AX7, the big bottle one on the left is a Sovtek KT66. It sounds better than the EL84 even though the bias is way off (cold). The thing is biased for an EL84 and I just plugged in the KT66 without changing anything (it's in parallel with the EL84 socket).
People were doing it on the AX84 site so I tried it too. Sounds awesome.

how much did it cost?

The parts kit was $204 shipped. Click the link below and then "Purchase" from the top menu bar on the web page to see all the options. Just make sure you understand what you're getting. It does not include the faceplate that I showed on mine. There is no speaker/cab included but you can plug it into any speaker cab. Soldering iron, wire, nuts/bolts etc are needed to finish it. Drill bits, a stepper bit, knock out punch, and Dremmel was used to cut all the holes. I borrowed the stepper bit and knock out punch from work. I had the Dremmel.

It's not really any cheaper then than buying an amp - since these amps are so low powered, right? (but it's the fun of building one! =))

True, you don't build amps because it's cheaper (it's not cheaper). You build them because you like building them or want something that isn't offered on the market. I wanted a low powered one so I could push it to full volume without an attenuator, and the thing sounds killer.

Re: Home Brew amp pic's

Actually, to get a 7 watter, you'd often be looking into a boutique amp which automatically commands a price tag above $100 grand. :newangel:
But as Joe said, a lot of it is for the experience. Also fun to have an easily saturated tone monster on hand.

Re: Home Brew amp pic's

Guys, I built my Mission Amps 5e3 Tweed deluxe with a new tweed cab and 12" speaker for 650 bucks. You can buy the Bad Cat version, called the Classic Cat (limited production) for 750.

But, the Tweedy Deluxe is just so freaking cool to play. It's about 15-20 watts, not sure how much, but the satisfaction of building it yourself and then reveling in the tone is incomparable.

Where's the pics of the inside of this 7 watt amp?

If you need more clean headroom, Bruce is about to release a Tweed Super kit using 6L6 power tubes, also a Double Deluxe using 4x6v6 tubes. Lots of cool options with enough power to gig a small club. And you willl have built it yourself. If something goes wrong, you'll be able to fix it yourself. How freaking cool is that?

Alll you have to do is follow the pictures, and know how to solder. It's not that hard.

My 5e3 is dead quiet and dependable and has tone out the wazoo! On my next Mission amp kit, I'll be using the upgraded Mercury Output tranny.

Re: Home Brew amp pic's

Are you sure of the wattage that your putting out?

As a Triode operating in a Class A state, your Power output is 5.8 W based at 63mA - Cathode biased.

Power can be increased to about 25 watts operating in a Class A/B, but then again your amp only showed on power tube, hense the Class A running state.

If you want a couple of books on this particular tube, send me a private e-mail and I will forward them to you.

BTW nice looking amp

Actually my power output with the EL84 is more like 6 watts output. 7 watts is the max but that's not where I am biased. I never actually measured the output using a sinewave generator or any other method. The KT66 is probably putting out about 10 watts.

I calculated the power dissipation, which is not power output, but here are the numbers if you are interested.

EL84
cathode current=47.846ma
plate current=43.165ma
plate to cathode voltage=238.7v
tube power dissipation=238.7 x 0.043165 = 10.30 watts

KT66
cathode current=75.23ma
plate current=69.70ma
plate to cathode voltage=217.4v
tube power dissipation=217.4 x .0697 = 15.15 watts

BTW, thanks for the compliment.

Looks cool. A board layout. So what are the features? Stages of gain? Single ended? push/pull? Reverb? Master volume? power tube(s) type, watts, and what amp does it most sound like? anything else interesting, do tell.

so many questions, so many questions...

Re: Home Brew amp pic's

You're getting me salivating for one of those. Damn how many soldering joints did you have to make? It looks pretty complicated to me. Does it have an effects loop or reverb?

how experienced should you be before trying to build one of these amps....?
