Homemade a speaker cab?

Was thinking about making a speaker cab for my ht1 and i was wondering if any of you have done it? I have seen a few pics and vids and the construction looks pretty easy so i was just wondering what do i really need to consider?

Wood type, will birch ply work?

Speaker size in comparison to cab size? Is there a formula?

Thanks me lads.

Re: Homemade a speaker cab?

13 ply marine grade Baltic Borcsht. I have experience with open back ( Fender), and sealed cabinets.
Open back enclosures , it do not matter the size or shape, but does matetr the construction type- Fender spec is by far the best IMO.I thought the Mesa double baffle design was horrible, at least for 4x10, do not know about others..
IMO for open back, Marshall more narrow and restricted internal space gives the best punchy and sound- the bigger internal volumes cabintes like Ornge and old Sunn 4x12's have a kind of 1/2 open back 1/2 closed sound.
BTW, I'm no stalking you Kramerstein, you just happen to have some of the posts that are more interesting to me.

How about this http://www.diyaudioandvideo.com/Calculator/Box/?
And if you use plywood, try to get "void free" ply.

Phat response mate.

Re: Homemade a speaker cab?

I was going to build one, for a while anyways. It was so much cheaper to just buy one. Good luck.

Re: Homemade a speaker cab?

I've been wanting to build my own cab for a while now. Please, if you build it, take lots of pictures and do a write up for it. I was going to do mine with a light colored grill cloth, then do a big stencil on the front, Tom Morello style.

Will do. ''if'' is the key word here.

Dingo PLEASE!!! I don't know why you censored "pimp".

Lol Marine Grade Birch Plywood, and pick whatever joint works that you're comfortable with. I'd recommend dadoes with a lot of surface area + bracing, finger joints, mortise and tenon, or tongue and groove with biscuits. Any of those will survive a damn tornado/pissed off spouse. All of those joints should be within your skill range, and you have to know-how to get by with minimal tools, so you can save money doing it yourself. I know I made a killer 2x12 cabinet for ~$300 that is way too loud.

Now what are we talking about? 1x12? 2x10? 2x12? 4x10? 4x12? Say "**** it" and make a 4x15 for ****s and giggles? Open back? Closed back? There's more design involved in a closed back - mostly to make sure the cabinet doesn't blow up (which you may want - I know I'd enjoy it). Also, do you want the cabinet to sound neutral? Any particular frequencies you want to be naturally boosted by the enclosure? How loud do you want it?

Yes it does. HUGE difference with a minor change in dimensions. Standing frequencies can still happen in an open back: There are still many possibilities for parallel sides when only part of the back is open. Also, the size and shape of the opening in the back makes a HUGE difference. A bigger opening means more sound of the opposite phase being expelled through the back, and then being reflected by whatever is behind the cabinet. The sound is also different at different parts of the speaker - openings at certain areas behind the speaker will allow sound from those parts of the speaker to be expelled through the back.

Re: Homemade a speaker cab?

My Dad (r.i.p.) and I made a sealed 2x10 bass cab. We used jarrah and mahogany and separated the chambers for each speaker. It's very heavy but sounds sweet. I'll have to do some hunting through my files but I'm pretty sure I wrote up a schematic somewhere.
