Hoping I dodged a bullet

Anyone more than mildly familiar with Egnater amps knows their power transformers are crap and prone to failure.

I was sure mine gave up the ghost. But when I pulled the amp out of the cabinet, I found this... I'm hoping a power transformer upgrade is still just an optional procedure. Planning to test as soon as I have the house to myself.

Was that wire connected to the power transformer? I also see a red, insulated quick disconnect that isn't hooked up. I like Egnater amps from clips I've heard and the one Rebel (30, I think) that I checked out. But I also heard about their transformers, although I thought they solved that issue. Anyway, if those are connected to the transformer, it kind of makes me wonder if they use the quick disconnects because they expect the transformer to blow and it makes it easier for them to swap it out. Maybe I'm just being cynical.

At any rate, I'm thinking that if the amp is dead and you pulled that burnt connector from the power tranny, and you are thinking that replacing the connector will get you back up and running, you may be disappointed. Not trying to be a bummer, just saying that there is a reason why a wire or connector gets smoked and it's generally the component it's connected to or a related component that took out the one it's connected to. But hey, I'm not an amp tech.

It's never good to let the smoke out of the wire.

Re: Hoping I dodged a bullet

I've seen a similar situation with a Tweaker 40 & the transformer was shot & if I had to guess I'd say yours is as well. The Tweaker didn't have the quick connects but the insulation on the wires coming from the transformer were brunt up just like your picture.

If you do decide to give it another go just be careful, there is a chance that you could damage it & other components even more. If I were you I'd probably just replace it because even if it's not completely shot now there's obviously something wrong & I'm pretty sure it goes beyond a couple of bad wires? God knows they are prone to these problems so chances are it will fail eventually....

Re: Hoping I dodged a bullet

The wire was actually loose... I'm guessing the burnt part was from some arcing when the connector slipped off. I put it back and everything works. My guess is vibrations loosened it. Wasn't the only loose wire I found either. It was just the loosest.

The red wire you see is actually properly seated.

I do plan to replace the transformer anyway though. Just from all the reviews I suspect that I'm only prolonging the inevitable by not replacing the transformer. Besides, $300 investment in a better power trans will significantly improve the sound too

That would do it. Do yourself a favor and replace that smoked quick connect. The oxides formed on the burnt area are probably hurting conductivity. Even if it works fine with the burnt one, if nothing else, a new one will give you a clean slate for visual checks for any arcing or what not. Make sure it's snug too.
