Hot pup for the neck spot

Hi All. It's been a while since I've posted here. I'd appreciate any suggestions for a pup in the neck position. The guitar in question is a neck thru walnut/walnut with a bubinga fingerboard. Two humbuckers, 3-way with 2 on/on mini toggles for splitting each pup. I'm going with the Custom in the bridge and thought of putting a 59 in the neck which is always a good choice. However, I think that I want something a bit hotter and was thinking of the distortion in the neck spot. What do you guys think? How does the distortion sound split in the neck. I know that it sounds pretty good in the bridge and is actually quite versitile.

Re: Hot pup for the neck spot

The distortion sounds awesome in the neck (great for high gain riffing and soloing) and it sounds good split as well (in fact, if you want to play clean on it, that's pretty much the only way to go IMO).

If you like the 59 but want some more attitude try a screaming demon in the neck.

True. I do love this pup in the bridge of my strat. I'll have to think about this. Then again maybe I'll put in a CC like Hamer does in the Monaco I believe.

Hamer puts a Custom in the neck of the Monaco and a Custom Custom in the bridge.

I just put a Distortion set back in to one of my Les Pauls. The Distortion neck pickup is definately one of the most over looked and under appriciated pickups in the SD line.

A Custom in the bridge and a DDn would be seriously cool.

Man, this thread got me really thinking about what a great pickup for doing some magnet swapping the Distortion neck might be. I wonder how it would sound with an A8 or A4?? At 12.7K it's kind of in a sweet spot other Duncans don't cover. Anybody done any expermentation? I just might have to drop an A8 into one and see what I come up with!!

Another pickup to consider, because it's a little hotter than a 59 but not as hot as your Custom is the Pearly Gates neck. Your picking nuances come through really well with a Pearly Gates neck too.

A Full Shred neck would sound more rock n' roll, with a flutey lead tone that's great for speed picking solos on the neck pickup. I think it's about the same output as the Custom, or slightly less. A good match.

The Parallel Axis neck is also medium output, hotter than a 59, and has a thick, warm tone, if you're after that sound. It's not the Duncan equivalent of an Air Norton in the neck spot, but it's in that ballpark.

Well I just ordered the Custom/Distortion from you last night. Feel free to throw in a couple of magnets and I'll let you know.:1:
