Hot Rod Deluxe Owners?

"The Hot Rod Deluxe is, as far as we know, the best-selling tube amplifier of all time."
- Shane Nicholas, Marketing Manager for Fender Amplifiers

With that thought in mind, how many of you out there own, have owned or are looking to acquire a Hot Rod Deluxe?

If you used to own one and got rid of it, why?

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners?

I really want one. I play one every time that I go into my local shop. If I had the cash. lemme tell ya, I'd be jammin on one right now.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners?

I had one....sold it because it didn't produce a useable overdrive for my type of music...Hard Rock/Classic Rock/Some Metal. It was always just too harsh and grainy. I wanted useable OD from the amp without the need for pedals.

I went Marshall and have never looked back.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners?

The Hot Rod Deluxe is my next amp purchase. They're loud, have great clean tone, and I like the drive channel when I need a little hair and the more drive channel when I want distortion.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners?

There's one out to the rehearsal studio I frequent. I love the cleans but the gain is sub par (IMO) to say the least.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners?

I had one and I loved the cleans and the reverb. The overdrive wasn't good so I sold it and got a Marshall DSL401 and I wish I had the Hot Rod Deluxe back. All you need is a good effects pedal and you have the best of both worlds. From now on, I'm buying an amp with incredible cleans (like the HRD), and getting a nice pedal like the one I have now (Boss ME-50). I'll stick with that. Btw, the HRD is LOUD!

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners?

not Hot Rod Deluxe..Hot Rod Deville is the one i want.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners?

i got one

quite the opposite tho, i don't like the cleans so much, muddy, but love the drive

but after i get my torres mod, and a rat to fatten up the 100% crunch in the drive, it should be perfect

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners?

it all depends on what you are looking for in the way you get your sound...if you are a pedal pusher...you have to have an amp with great cleans...the Hot Rods (deluxe and deville) are great at this!

if you want guitar+chord+amp=distortion/overdrive...then you might want to consider something else...not that they can't do it at all...just that there are better options for that setup out there...?!

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners?

I have one and love the cleans, I play a lot clean and a lot distorted, at that time I compare with a marshall avt50 and the hot rod is so much better. Im looking for great distorted tones too and i´m near. With distortion pedals with a lot of tweak u can get great tone, and in the very near future I´m gonna buy a pod 2.0 or xt to use as a preamp in the effects loop in with an a/b selector to swith from distorted via pod using just the power of the hoit rod, and the fenders clean.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners?

I used to have one, but sold it.

The CLEANS and reverb were AMAZING. So clean, so pure, and I could play clean on the neck pup through that thing for days on end and never get tired of its awesome clean tone.

The DRIVE was horrible. Grainy, farty, and just simply bad if you're looking for any drive above a moderately distorted bluesy tone. I wanted to be able to get a metal tone, so I did what some of you suggested and tried out some distortion pedals (Mesa V-Twin, Zoom Hyper Lead, Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion). The Mega Distortion was the best of them, as it really thickened up the amp's bright character and gave it some juice. It still had that fizzy distortion pedal tone, though, and I got sick of messing around with pedals, and ended up selling the HRD with hopes of getting a tube amp made for distortion. Enter Laney AOR50II. :)

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners?

I love my Hot Rod Deluxe. I think you can't get a better amp for the money. I had to save up for a long time to get an amp so I did a lot of searching and playing and just thought this one was it. Plenty, plenty loud. Great clean tones. I mostly use my boss OS-2 overdrive/distortion cause I like it's sound better than the amps drive channels, but wouldn't say they are terrible. Yes if you are wanting to play metal this might not be for you, but it is made for distortion. It sings when I use my boss, great rock tones, even country too. I heard a demo of the Eminence Privete Jack and Blue Tick Hound speakers and I'm wondering how awsome it would sound with one of these. But I think it's the best amp in it's price range.
