Hot Rod Deluxe, show your love!

I know that there are several being used by forum members, what's the consensis on must do mods: Speakers, tubes, etc..? Yes, I know that there are lot's of threads but I'm not going to sift through them all.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe, show your love!

Great amp. Tube change is essential for sure, speaker change maybe.

I had one for a couple of years. I found the More Drive channel to be mostly useless, but the clean and the drive are excellent. One of the best amps in its size and price range, no doubt about it.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe, show your love!

honestly if i was to but one again, i'd load it with jj 6v6's & an eminence wizard. as far as pre's i'd prolly throw in an extra 12at7 in the preamp to ease off some of the gain & get a big muff for heavy parts/solos

yes 6v6's would drop the wattage but anyone looking at 40 watt 1x12's obviously plays venues where you can mic stuff anyways, plus the emi wizard is TONS louder than the stock speaker, it's like night & day. And at 75 watts it's gonna bloom when the amp is cranked, as it should

I was hoping that you'd chime in! If I do get one, I will stick to 6l6's as this is going to be more for cleans.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe, show your love!

ah, cool

in that case i'd go with ruby 6l6mstr's & 12at7's in either all positions or 2 of em

keep in mind though this thing wasn't designed to stay clean, the at7's will help a lot, but

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe, show your love!

God help me I wanted to like the one I had.

Tried as I could I just could NOT get the amp to sound the way I wanted to. Never tried a speaker change or newer tubes though.

For wattage and size it's a very attractive amp. Something that was voiced just a little differently I might very well consider though.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe, show your love!

I played lots of gigs with mine, in my last band - never had a problem getting volume, that's for sure :D
Plenty of headroom. Very portable. I liked the Jensen c12n speaker and Svetlana 6L6 power tubes. I like Sovtek 12ax7LPS tubes for the preamp section.
In my opinion, the "More Drive" option seems to work with single coil pickups more than humbuckers.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe, show your love!

I'll join the club. I have JJ 6V6's and ECC83S's in mine. Everything else stock. It has been a great first tube amp, but I'm getting tired of it's tone. Guess I'll be sticking with it though since I can't afford what I really want.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe, show your love!

I dig mine and it's bone stock. I do have a Mullard 12AT7 to put in it but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe, show your love!

it's not useless, you just can't crank the drive, you gotta keep it low, like around 6

and for something voiced a tad bit differently try a blues deluxe

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe, show your love!

1st thing is visit this website http://studentweb.eku.edu/justin_holton/ It's a great source of information. Some of the mods are crazy and unnecessary,But they are there if you so desire. The most important thing to do with a HRD is get good glass in it,And bias it a Lil' Hot. The amp is a piece of cake to Bias. All you need is a multi meter,Small plastic handled screwdriver and a reasonable amount of common sense.Mine came from the factory biased at 59mV. I bumped it up to 68mV (as per J. Holton's suggestion) W/t a set of NOS 6L6's I had on hand.
For preamp tubes? Experiment! For me, My magic configuration is a 12AX7 in VI, 12AT7 in VII and a 5751 in V3 (all NOS Tubes) I almost never use the drive channel,But using lower gain tubes in the 2nd gain stage and phase Inverter slots make the Drive channel MUCH MORE Palatable, And increases your headroom slightly.Other than this, There are no real mods done to my amp. Just find the right dirt boxes to fit your style ,And away you go. (I use the SFX-03):smokin: If your going for a more rock dist. tone? You may want to swap the speaker out? Another feature of the HRD is you can run another 8 ohm load . I have a 1x12 cab w/t a V30 if I want add a Lil' grind to my tone.
If I need to move some more air... the HRD sits perfect on top of my 2x12 cab.
