Hot Rod Deluxe

I am looking at a bunch of tube amps in the low(er) price range , and i have a question about the hot rod deluxe, can it do iron maiden, sabbath-like distortion, if not how does it accept pedals?

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

I don;t think it's quite that hot, distortion-wise. I find the Hot Rod series a little boring. The new Crate V-series with EL34's sound great and I think they're a better amp overall. FOr what you want, these may not do it for you. CHeck out the Marshall DSL or TSL combos (a bit pricey)

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

The distortion isn't going to work for that stuff. But I think the Deluxe was made for pedals and would sound great with the right setup.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

The Hot Rod series have great clean tone and do well with effects. Remember though.... Overdrives, Distortions, Wahs, volume pedals, compressors, etc go direct while delays, reverbs, chorus, etc. work better through the effects loop; especially with these amps, I have found. For the heavier distortions, you'll need a pedal...

Jeffrec i have looked into the DSL/TSL series they are real pricey here in canada, but the crate V-series looks interesting.... any other suggestions?

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

it takes pedals really really well

get an eminence red white & blues speaker, stock one won't cut it at high volumes, bedroom ones it will, but, yeah

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

how much do EL34 tubes go for? would that V15 crate really work well(with EL34's) for what i want?, because my local shop does not carry crate and i would have to buy from musicians friend or music 123 or something.

+1 I have the vFX5112 and I love it, I don't know how the cleans compare to a HRD but I like them a lot on the V series. The overdrive is nice too.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

hmm that crate V15 is looking good with those EL34 tubes, fiber-optics, u have a MIM strat with hot rails do you like the tone?, got any clips of it?

oh and would i need to run a pedal into the amp to get that type of distortion or should i get a pedal?

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

I know some may disagree, but IMO Fender amps are the wrong amp to buy for metal.
I see a lot of posts here, all talking about tubes, speakers, mods, etc to get the right sound, but it's just the wrong amp. Personally, I think for rock/metal tones, it's best to stay with a head/cab setup with good gain tones right outta the box.
Check out Crate BV, Peavey 5150, Carvin Legacy, ENGL Fireball, Marshall DSL's, Mesa Single Recs, Ashdown, Hughes & Kettner, or consider a rackmount or modeling rig.
The best Solid state/modeling gain machine I've heard is the Vox Valvetronix Rectifier settings w/OD modelers added. Don't let the retro look fool you, they got more gain than almost any other amp.

I love my MIM strat with Hot Rails, but to me it doesn't have as much beef and chunk as a axe with some nice Duncan humbuckers. If I went and got a Les Paul I would still end up playing my strat a fairly good amount of time. As for using a distortion pedal on the V series, I have a MT-2 and I hardly use it anymore since I have a nice Tube tone OD. I occasionally use it just to get a nice crunch tone going. The V series takes pedals pretty well, but I have to 5112 so It has the 15 effects which are pretty nice. The pedal even comes with a botton to turn the effects on and off on each channel. I don't think the V15 comes with FX though.

+1 You can get a nice tone for metal on fender amp if you do some mods but all in all it comes down to the same thing, there is going to be a better amp for metal. That doesn't mean I hate fender amps just if you looking metal tones and high distortion go to a marshall, mesa, peavey or anyone of the high gain amps which are meant for metal and harder rock.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

the problem with all those amps you listed Gearjoneser is the price, there soo damn expensive.

Well, if you're thinking of the Hot Rod Deluxe, look into the Hot Hot Rod DeVille (2X12) 60w. They're not bad. Marshall's solid state stuff can sound good too for metal. The Crate Blue Voodoo series was made for that, but I've always found the gain to be way to buzzy for my tastes. (I'm into British Blues and Classic rock, so I may not be the best advice giver on this one). Good luck & let us know what you come up with.

Jeff

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

I'm not a big metal guy so i can't really give you a good response. If you're not on a budget, indyguitarist has some metalzone mods that look promising, i can't tell you what exactly the mods are though cuz i don't own one & have never looked at a schematic for one or anything like that.

my best advice is to go into a store & try them. a deluxe/deville with the volume just over 1 with the bass at 12 will be ballpark of the tone you'd get with the deville with the speaker changes

of course you could always get a deluxe & just get a closed back 2x12 cab with a pair of them, avatar or something.
