Hot Rodded set in Epi Dot.

So I know it's sacreligious to utter these words, but I hate the Seth Lovers I put in my Dot. I have had good luck with the JB/59 in my Les Paul so I am wondering about the Jazzn. I wonder can you still roll off the tone and get decent woman tone. I know the 59 does this very well but the 59 is is a little boomy when played clean. The sound samples I have heard of the Jazz neck overall sound quite nice. Oh by the way I am playing through a Keeley Seeing Eye Modded Boss DS-1 into a Peavey Delta Blues.

Not sure personally how well the Hot Rodded set would work in a Dot, but if I remember correctly Aceman has a set in his (or at least the JB).

I replaced '59 with Jazz in neck position of Dot. Better result overall for me. Had A2P in the bridge. Awesome bites and crunch without being harsh. JB sounds great in maple solid body. Idk about JB in maple hollowbody.

JazzN's aren't as bassy as '59N's. As far as the bridge slot, some guys like JB's in a variety of guitar designs and woods, some only like them in bright woods, and others don't really care for them at all. There's other Duncan options. What are you wanting in a bridge PU?

As far as the sound I want. I really like the sound of the JB in the bridge, but as far as the neck goes, I want to be able to play Joe Pass style jazz, but I also would like to crank up the gain, turn the tone down on the guitar and get that Sunshine Of Your Love tone. Can the Jazz do that?

Epiphone Dot Studio (In Tomato) with a JB/Jazz Combo. Not the greatest sound from iPhone recording - you are mostly hearing that Blackstar and mine is Marshall / Slap echo….

I will say that Yes - the JB RAWKS in there. I was a little worried, but for $200 guitar + JB/Jazz…you give it a shot. And I haven't had any feedback problems. They generally kick @$$ and I'm leaving them.

The Jazz will indeed do Jazz. It takes some serious Tone / Amp EQ manipulations, but it can give a great fat, woody, but articulate sound. That said - not my first or even fifth choice for those tones.

But will it do woman tone? Ithink the Jazz sounds good, but if it won't do woman tone I would probably go with the 59

I don't think the Jazz neck has enough "meat" to get woman tone with the tone rolled off. To me, most of its energy is in the top end, with scooped out mids and loose (but not boomy) low end. You could maybe get there with other gear, e.g., mids-heavy amp, amp settings, etc., but that would take some work.

To my mind, the most ready candidates for woman tone are the bassy or mids-heavy SD PAF variants: Alnico II Pro neck, 59 neck, Pearly Gates neck, Slash neck.

This is kind of a left field option, but one I've been considering myself - there's the Benedetto line of pickups within the SD lineup. Those pickups are oriented towards traditional jazz players, and so tend towards the warm mids and bass that you might want. There's evidently a traditional PAF within the Benedetto line that may be worth exploring:

What didn't you like about the Seths?

I have used the 59 before and got awesome woman tone out of it. I guess I will have to choice between the Jazz (clarity) or the 59 (woman tone) I never played Jazz with the 59 when I had it in another guitar back in the 90's. Honestly I didn't know anywhere near what I know now about tone.

As far as the Seth's. They just didn't do it for me. I just assumed that being brought on Duane Allman and Cream era Clapton that they would be the perfect pickups for me, but they just seemed very anemic to me. $200.00 later.

I just had a thought. If I didn't dig the Jazz I understand if you change to Alnico 5 to an Alnico 2 and I would have the Alnico 2 pickup. What do you think of that?

It'll be closer to a Seth than you want.
