Seth Lovers vs ‘59s Epiphone Dot through DRRI

Re: Seth Lovers vs ‘59s Epiphone Dot through DRRI

Hello again!

So they finally came in and wow! They are definitely vintage pickups. Almost brighter than I expected, too. I had a close buddy of mine, who graciously offered, install them in my Dot along with some new orange drops. He wired it 50’s vintage style and while I can see the tone there, now when I play through my amp, DRRI, either straight or through my pedal board, there is a prominent buzzing. Not a hum, a constant buzz. It’s definitely noticeable and wasn’t there with the stock pickups.

My question is, is this just the nature of the pickups? Perhaps because of the vintage wiring style? I play at church now and this buzz is enough of a sore point that I may consider swapping these for something else if this is just how they’re supposed to work but I doubt they would be recommended so often if this was the case. It isn’t the type of buzz that goes away when I touch the strings so I’m not sure that it’s a grounding issue. Amp has recently been serviced and biased so I don’t think it’s that causing the issue all of a sudden either.

No, the buzzing isn't normal. It sounds like it could be a grounding issue with the pickups: maybe a solder joint on the ground isn't making the proper connecting. Is it buzzing on one pickup or both? They should be pretty much dead quiet, unless you have a ton of gain and volume.

You can get some feedback under high-ish gain, especially facing the amp, but there should be no buzzing. Sounds like the wiring is a little off, which sucks on a hollow body.

It definitely buzzes with both pickups on, and individually. I may have to ask to have the wiring checked. I want it to be ready to go!

Ok problem solved. Kind of. This is the first time I’ve used unpotted pickups and I’ve been playing in the bonus room over the garage. It seems that it only happens in that room. I guess rooms over garages can be known for noisy wiring?

One thing. I am kind of missing the “bite” of the stock Epi bridge pickup that I had in there. Should I try adjusting some pole pieces or messing with the pickup height? I’m worried that I may prefer the A5 bite in the bridge but so many people recommend these pickups I want to give them a chance. The other thing, I bought this off of Craigslist and assumed that the Dot has 10’s on it. We put some 10’s on there and it feels a lot more wiry and loose. Would upping the string gauge give me more of that bite?

I basically need to decide to keep these or use the 21 Day exchange for ‘59s or WLH while I still can.

wlh dont have all that much bite. the 59 would have more, the seth bridge usually has enough but...

I've got Seth Lovers in my Epi Sheraton. Sounds amazing.

I play it in this clip. Nevermind the playing – or singing – but the guitar sounds really nice in my ears.
I have it wired out of phase in the middle so I start there.
Then I go to the neck pickup and finish of last two turns on the bridge. So I play through all positions in this clip.
