hot rodded set ok for metal?

Hi all

Just quick question, I know it's subjective, but would the jb/jazz set be suitable for 80s style metal or would the jb/59set be better. I only ask as I have a chance at a good price on the hot nodded set and can't seem to locate the jb/59 as a set.

JB/'59 don't come packaged as a set, but don't worry, the JB/Jazz combo can pretty much do anything a JB/'59 set can, including 80s metal.

The key here is the JB. So you will be in good shape with the JB/Jazz

You do understand that there is nothing what-so-ever 'hot rodded' about a JazzN. It's pretty clear and tame, but that works well with a lot of distortion.

As long as your definition of metal is more aligned with the 80's, then you'll be fine. The more modern styles and downtuning perhaps aren't the best with a JB.

I agree. Although Joe from Gojira is an exception. Not sure if he is still using it but I remember reading he was using a JB in Mahogony thru 6505's. Then the switch to EVH 5150iii's.

Michael Amott of Arch Enemy and Carcass also used a JB for a long time before switching to Dean and that's retty fast and downtuned. So it kinda depends on your own style and rig. A Tube Screamer can also tighten things up considerably.

The JB IS 80s metal, in a superstrat it's the sound of hair metal: spongy mids, great leads, it's a really 'present' pickup. At that time you also had guys like Dave Mustaine from Megadeth using it for heavier tones too.

The neck pickup is mostly about personal preference, both the 59 and the Jazz have similar voices, though the 59 was more likely what was used during the 80s.

You will not be disappointed with the Hot Rodded set, definitely if that is the sound you are going for. I have this set in my strat.. She will do anything I ask of her, especially 80's metal.
