Hot Stack Plus STK-S9 Review

I have had this pickup installed for about a week now and thought I should post a review since information about this pickup is scarce. This is a GREAT single humbucker for a strat bridge. I installed this in my Am Deluxe alder strat with rosewood fretboard. It's the new Am. Deluxe with the NS3 pickups instead of last years model with the SCN's.

As a bridge humbucking pickup, it pairs very well with the stock neck & middle pickups. There is a noticeable difference in output between single coils and the STK-S9, but it still retains a lot of single coil characteristics.

The most amazing things about it are that it has awesome harmonics and if you juice the amp distortion, you can get really nice chugging sounds out of the low E and A strings. Harmonics on this thing virtually jump out of the pickup on command. It's not as crazy as some of the harmonics you can get out of a Dimarzio Fred or D Sonic, but for a single humbucker is very impressive.

It's fairly tight and has great definition. It's not harsh at all and has prominent mids. With my tone control all the way up it's almost perfect, so I set it on 8 for the perfect warmth and treble response.

If it could be just a little bit hotter I would have absolutely no criticism of it. I'm still not sure if I installed it wrong, but everything is working as it should and it sounds great so I'm not worried about it now. I know resistance is not a measure of output, but Seymour Duncan pickups seem to generally indicate more output with higher resitances. This is rated around 20 whereas the JB and Lil 59 had around 1/2 the resistance.

I thought it would be louder and more humbucker like, but the description on the website seems fairly accurate. It's a great pickup and I'm going to keep it in my strat.

I would post a sound clip but I tried that many times before without a response, so I'm obviously not a very good player. Just take my word for it that it's a really great pickup.

Yup. Love mine too. And this pup definitely dispels the idea of DCR = output. But, its output is perfect to my ears. Great pup.

Maybe they were awed into speechlessness. ;)

Hey gents, I'm interested in putting some Stack Plus-es (to include a Hot Stack Plus in the bridge!) into my partscaster strat, part of which is an Eric Johnson body; the EJ has vintage-depth pickup routes. Have you guys tried putting Stack Plus-es into vintage-depth routes, and have you encountered any issues with the install? Sorry for the hijack!

My STK-S9 is installed in my custom shop strat that has the vintage 3 single-coil route. No problems installing it at all.

Re: Hot Stack Plus STK-S9 Review

So... they could be hotter? How much hotter?

I wonder if the Custom Stack Plus is a thicker wire gauge and would have more oomph... the YJM Fury bridge has more turns of wire than the Hot Stack Plus...

A set-up of Custom Stack Plus(B), Vintage Hot Stack Plus(M) and Hot Stack Plus(N) might be interesting.

Re: Hot Stack Plus STK-S9 Review

The SSS routes aren't all the same depth. I had problems with getting the adjustment range I wanted with a set of Vintage Rails in a '55 RI (Also a custom shop). If you're willing to shim, you might have better luck.

Re: Hot Stack Plus STK-S9 Review

Just installed this puppy to bridge position. It's definitely NOT hot, since I have Lace Censors in neck & middle pos and they seem hotter. Haven't had the chance for a full test run with my own rig (just a brief jam at the shop) but it seems ok. Coil split sound is almost identical to that of the "humbucking". I expected bigger difference. But like I said, seems ok.

Re: Hot Stack Plus STK-S9 Review

This should be super hot...check the wiring. Try wiring directly to the jack to see if the sound changes. I know this is a pain with a Strat, but worth doing to make sure everything is OK.

Re: Hot Stack Plus STK-S9 Review

i have a hot strat stack + and it is much stronger and middier than any vintage toned single coil. i havent split mine so dont know how that sounds

Re: Hot Stack Plus STK-S9 Review

The coils on the stacks are not even, so splitting is never a night/day difference. To me, it affects the way the pickup responds, more than a huge tonal change (there is some, but not a ton). It is still worth doing, though- I split a Classic Stack Plus on my Warmoth.
