Hey All

I have a stock CIJ Fender Jazzmaster. Would like to upgrade to SD's. What do you guys like better the "Hot" set or the "Quarter Pounder" set? I wanna get more bottom end out of it.

Also, when upgrading to SD's for Jazzmaster, will the pickups take away any of that Jazzmaster Twang/Plonk. I would like to keep that part of the tone.

Re: Hot VS Quater Pounder

Well when I went to QPs in my tele they took all the twang away so I replaced them within a week.

I suggest if you don't want to lose any character to go with a more vintage style pickup, if that's not an option try the Hot.

Mephis... I've wondered myself if that would be the effect of QPs :smack:

too bad that's what you found... I've been thinking of a second Mustang project having them :laugh2: not anymore

Re: Hot VS Quater Pounder

I use tapped Strat QPs and love them in both settings. I had a set of the Tele version and thought they sounded good in tapped mode but muddy in full-power.

If you go the tapped route you get both worlds, you'll probably dig ONE of them...

Re: Hot VS Quater Pounder

Also, consider the custom single coil. It's supposed to retain more of a single coil character of all the high output single coils.

Re: Hot VS Quater Pounder

I'll be different here.

In my experience, stick with either the Hot for Jazzmaster or Vintage for Jazzmaster. I had a hot in the bridge and a vintage in the neck of my CIJ jazzmaster and it was amazing. When I get my new Jazzmaster (had to sell the old one), I'll be going vintage/vintage probably. The vintage pickup really nailed "That Jazzmaster sound", but the hot did have more bass/output.

I had QPs in my Tele, and they sounded great. Tons of low end.

That said the upper mids are lacking.

Re: Hot VS Quater Pounder

Full pair of tapped QPs in my tele and the twang is still there. Moreso in the tapped mode, but still existent in full mode (maybe be partially due to the 3 brass saddles and ashtray bridge). I'd agree though that a more vintage correct pickup retains much more twang than the QP set. The hots retain more of a vintage correct tone, while the QPs offer a much fatter and warmer tone.

IMO, you can't really go wrong with either setup. I happen to like both, just happen to like the QPs a little better. That said, I have no experience with a Jazzmaster, so these results may vary.

Re: Hot VS Quater Pounder

I never tried a Hot but have tried the Quarter Pounder and it's definitely not the ticket for twang, even tapped.

That's the dillema here. You say you want a little more low end, and the QP's have it because of the magnet size. They hear a larger section of the string, and therefore that cancels out a little of the twang.

Agreed. You can't get the twang back just by winding the 1/4" magnets differently, or installing a tap. They just hear the strings differently.

Personally, I love the 1/4lbs, and I'd probably want them in a Jazzmaster myself, if I owned one. They would satisfy your low end quest, too. But I'd have to recommend the Hot set over the QP's, and whatever low end you get from the Hot's, it'll have to be enough because otherwise you'll lose too much of the Jazzmaster tone IMO.
