Hotel California Solo

Re: Hotel California Solo

perhaps an odd choice for someone that is Über metal, but it sounds good to me! doesn't really need much work, maybe just a couple of runthroughs to get a more natural/looser feel. they probably recorded it in sections anyway (or you could at least use that technique to really nail it in a recording).

now get out there and play some carcass, hehe.

Re: Hotel California Solo

I agree with Dank. A little more work and it'll sound more natural, but you've got the overall gist of the thing. Nice work, especially for an über-metal d00d! :)

Re: Hotel California Solo

Thank you for commenting. I wish I was good enough to play metal songs but I cannot play that fast yet. The only things I play now are blues and classic rock songs. As you can tell I've only been playing 1 1/2 years and require much more practice. I hope to one day be able to play Lamb of God and Dream Theater.

Yes this solo needs work. I plan to reupload a new recording of it soon after I improve. What did you think of the tone? I know I didnt' have my amp up very loud. Next time I will use an OD to boost it to see if that improves my sound. Thanks for listening.

Re: Hotel California Solo

Man, if I, who has been playing for 15 years laid down something like that, I would be proud!

You rock!

Sure it'll get better with practice, but ****, that's awesome by any standard.

That is really good playing and it's way beyond excellent if you've only been at it for a couple of years .... and by the way, no one would ever be able to tell! For the tone ..... I think Joe's tone is brighter and a little less fat. You might try a Tube Screamer or even an SD-1 out front for a little more sustain.

I couldn't play like that at 1.5 years! You must practice a lot! And if you can play that, you can play metal.

Re: Hotel California Solo

My first crack at Hotel California solo. Using my Carvin CS4. I just started learning it the day before yesterday. Obviously I need to practice it more so here goes. Let me know waht you think.

Wow, that's fabulous after just 2 days! It took me 20 years to get to this point. Check out the final note in the first two phrases of the intro. I think you are playing them a half step sharp...If you finish them 1/2 step lower you can bend them up to where you are playing them.

I really liked the tone! It's similar to the original, but still sounds different enough to give it some individuality. Sounds great to me, but if you're going for the original I'd make it a little more bright on the higher notes! But like I said, I enjoyed this one like it is. And you must have some serious dedication if you can play that after 2 days and only playing guitar for 1 1/2 years...kudos.

Yes I am very dedicated to practice. I practice two hours daily sometimes more. I know some metal songs but mostly easy stuff like Creeping Death and Four Horsemen. It is so frustrating to progress this slow. Makes me want to give up and play only blues. I wish I can play fast like Marty Friedman and John Petrucci. Woa they are fast!

Thank you for the generous comments. I will work on it. My Carvins came with .10 strings but I been using .009 since I started learning so my bends and vibrato suck now. People tell me I should try get used to .10s.

Thank you. I used an Elmwood Modena 60 to record the first one. It was low volume not enough to play with drums. It has 1/2 power switch. I should have used that but I always keep it on pentode so the tubes wear evenly.

Re: Hotel California Solo

Sounds pretty darn good to me. Just try to change pick ups to differentiate between the 2 guitar parts, otherwise a good job.

I did switch between the bridge and neck pickup around 1/2 of the solo. I need to change the stock pickups though. They little bit too plain.

Re: Hotel California Solo

Ok then, my laptop speakers are somewhat crap and my headphones aren't around! Still, great job in such a short space of time too... the practice has paid off!

Thanks. I think I finally nailed the solo. I will post soon. Please let me know what you all think then.

Re: Hotel California Solo

Very nice playing!

I also have to give major props for choosing this piece. It's super tasty, melodic, and full of sweet bends. :cool2:

Now you've got me wanting to take a stab at it!

Re: Hotel California Solo

Sounds really cool.

Maybe think about pushing that first bend a bit sharper...I expect to hear it go there and it doesn't. I know it's a different interpretation, but that note just makes that phrase, to me.

It's very tricky because the guitar and amp I have together are very bright so it seems like bright tone makes inaccurate bends stand out like a sore thumb. I'll try what you suggest but right now I'm concentrating on bending to pitch so it won't sound so amateurish. What are you suggesting like 1/4 step up maybe or some harmonic squeal?

I think Joe goes three semi tones up instead of a whole step.
