HotRails fullsized???

Re: HotRails fullsized???

if you had a digital multimeter set it on DC R on the 20k range and measure from the green to the black wires, the DCR should be similar to the one on the pickup specs (in the custom shop packages they list the p'up dcr) it should be the same, anywya mail the customshop about returning the p'up

Re: HotRails fullsized???

Thanks for helping me. I don't know if I'm doing this is the right way but this is how I measured it and the reading was this.
Is my voltmeter set correctly? Is this a correct reading?

Tell me about it. What could be causing this?
It's not like I have any spilt wiring going on here.
Basic humbucker wiring. Just look at it, one volume thats it…. as simple as it gets.
This pickup has to be made wrong……I hope I'm just wrong somehow, but I have gone over everything several times now and end
up with the same awful results.

DUDE!!!!!! That was the trick. What the hell man, did MJ get her wires crossed on this one.. LOL.
I knew I couldn't have been doing something wrong on such a simple set up. I was going nuts with this.
Thanks a million. This thread right here is a prime example of how useful forums like this can actually be.
I'm gona call it a night, but tomorrow I'm gonna play the hell out of this and give a review and write up.
Just curious, what do you think would happen if I switch the red out for the white, I may try this tomorrow.
Thanks again for everybody's help and patience with me.

Re: HotRails fullsized???

the pickup will be out of phase again, phase is still kind of confusing to me, probably the magnet on the pickup is flipped, so the north side is on the south and the south is on the north, i remember reading that happened with a standar production bucker once, the problem with this is that wired that way the bridge and neck will be out of phase in the middle position, but since your v (i assume it's a flying v style guitar right? or is it a star?) only has one pickup don't worry let it that way

Re: HotRails fullsized???

it is a Dean USA Rik Emmett V. The guitar next to it is a Warmoth Soloist I built back in the 80's.
It has a first year production Hotrails pickup that I have loved so much all these years. I'm going to do some sound samples
and compare the two. I know they won't sound exactly the same as the V is a set neck and the Warmoth is a bolt on
but they are both made from solid mahogany with ebony fretboards so it will be pretty close. From what I hear so far
the humbucker version of the Hotrails sounds very close.

Re: HotRails fullsized???

That's an awesome pickup you had made!! I always wondered what a Hotrail Humbucker would sound like, and seeing that it's possible, I may do my own version as well.
Do you have any more pictures of the pickup? Is it a metal base, or the plastic Dimebucker housing?
What are the specs on this? Kohms?,bass/middle/treble, and what magnet did you go with? Thanks for sharing this with us, I definitely appreciate that! I love rail humbuckers!!

PS, that's a sweet Emmett V you have there!! I always wanted one of those! They were very limited production weren't they not?
**edit** I love your Warmoth Strat also! Sure reminds me of a Charvel Model 88, which had an African Ribbon Mahogany body and a Tobacco finish, which your guitar reminded me of very much so.

Always wanted to try one . . . never did.

Re: HotRails fullsized???

Invader is the closest to the Hot Rails, but even then, its not. Duncan has no direct equivalent and the Invader, while different, is as close as it gets. That said, I think the Hot Rails sounds better than the Invader. The custom shop build is really cool.

Re: HotRails fullsized???

Awesome that you have gotten the help that you needed! Could we hear a clip now that you've got it working?

BTW Good call GilmourD...when I heard the clip my first thought was "Brian May is in the building!" Lol.

Re: HotRails fullsized???

Well, I sent it back. It was supposed to be made with a metal bottom and what I received was a all plastic case like the dime bucker.
So with the construction made wrong and the wiring wrong I spoke with the Custom Shop and they will correct this and make me a new one.
Great customer service by the CS. I will report back and make some sound clips when the new one arrives.

Re: HotRails fullsized???

I was wondering about the housing material....Cant wait to hear your new sound clip.... That's awesome that SD/CS is standing behind this 100%, ya cant ask for much better than that.

**NECRO BUMP** i too am curious of and about this...

Hey GEMINI i came across your thread and I too am looking for something that has the same tone as the Hot Rails but in a full-size humbucker... I have a '14 LTD ST-213 (alder body, bolt-on maple neck w/ maple FB...) with a HR in the bridge and it has the exact sound I love - the perfect balance of lows and highs, with just the right scoop on the mids for that perfect chunk, grind and growl - yet clean up & split nicely while retaining ots volume and attitude across the board!!!

I just picked up a mid-90's ESP Jake E. Lee signature model, and I want to have that same tone in that (which has the same specs: alder body, Bolt-On maple neck & fingerboard, only with a hardtail fixed bridge instead of a vintage trem...)...

After reading this entire thread, I'm curious to know how you made out with your CS pickup, and if it wound up working for you or not... Please post an update for those like me who are in the same boat and want the same HR tone from an actual humbucker!!

EDIT: i have seen some in other threads mention a DiMarzio Super 3 being the one that is pretty close... But I'm curious to how you made out with this, and if its worth having another one made or trying a Super 3...

LMK when you can, please and thank you!!

When this thread was started, the Jupiter Rails hadn't been created yet. I wonder how close, (or far off), it might be to a humbucker-sized Hot Rails? I don't think I've seen any reviews yet.

Compared to the Dimebucker, it seems to have a slightly restrained high end and a more pronounced low end to it - judging by the video Duncan made with Wes Hauch playing them back to back...

Thanks. I'll look for that.
