How about a custom shop tapped P90? Any feedback?

Hi guys,

The following concerns (USACG Mah/Maple body & Warmoth Maple 1 piece V neck)

09-USACG-Thinline-005PR.jpg

I have a set of Lollar p90s (bought them in 2003, and back then he did not offer overwound ones). While I am absolutely in love with the neck pickup, the bridge pickup is a bit wimpy. Especially when compared with the neck. Clean, the bridge sounds great, almost tele like. Yet, JD on my strat sounds more beefy. And that makes this pickup a bit (thin is not the term, it is almost there but not quite...) weak. I mean it sound a bit like strat bridge kind of...

It has a5 mags, and I definitely won't go for a8s in this one, because the change is too drastic. With a4s it became steely. With a2s the tone was right yet the output was lacking...

So, why not a Duncan Custom Shop p90? I even can ask for it to be tapped, to have a "clean" mode, and a "beefy" mode... I would have to check the polarity though...

I know that this is not a regular question, and that is especially why I would appreciate your input. Any other suggestions are welcome as well, like other brands and all...

Best,

B

PS. I have even considered rerouting the body to fit my PhatCat... But that would be insane... I mean drilling the body to fit a HB sized p90 into a p90 spot. :D But I KNOW that my PhatCat would do what I want.

Firstly. Did you try A5/A2 combo. The extra kick of the 5 and tone of the 2 might just work.

What is the K rating of that P90?

Zhangbucker has a whole heap of strength options in his P90 range if the Duncans aren't doing it either.

oh hell yes you should get a custom shop tapped p90! bad ass.

the guitar looks great. dont rout it for anything, just get a good pup for the bridge.

Exactly my sentiments...

:)

This weekend I am gonna be giving the Lollar p90 bridge one last chance.

Will let you guys know.

That orange finish makes me think of Gretsch. How about a hot Filtertron of some sort? :naughty:

Re: How about a custom shop tapped P90? Any feedback?

no no, it should be a p90 and it will kick ass

Re: How about a custom shop tapped P90? Any feedback?

Definitely keep the guitar as is. That's a beautiful looking ax. And no question that you should keep the cream P-90. The custom shop split P-90 sounds like the perfect way to go, but it's not going to be cheap. Look, you already have a good P-90 that just needs some tweaking. First try several mag swaps. you may just get what you're after without spending a bunch of bucks.

You said you're not into A8's, but if you want to beef it up a bit and get a little more output, but still retain a nice high end bite...try an A5/A8 mag combo in it. Or even an A3/A8 or A4/A8 to keep the output but give it more of an A2 tone.

If that doesn't work, then by all means go with the custom shop P-90.

That's definitly a mistake. I recently acquired a Gibson Tribute 50 with stock Gibson P90. To full and bassy in the neck, abnoxiously bright and thin in the bridge with 300k pots. After going thru some stages it now has a A3/a5 in the neck and a A4/A8 in the bridge. Maybe i try a A2/A8 but i am quite pleased with the results.

Re: How about a custom shop tapped P90? Any feedback?

Yeh, don't close down to the idea of using A8 mags. Could be just what you need to get what you want.

But if you want to be dogmatic about it and just jump right in to the custom shop...well it's your dime.

Re: How about a custom shop tapped P90? Any feedback?

Guys, not everbody has to like a8s.

;)

I don't share my sentiments about the stuff that I don't like that much, but now that we are talking about it... Well I hated that thing in all the PAF clones that I have tried in. Just not my thing. I am a sucker for clarity, and for me its excessive power is killing the harmonics making the dominant ones too upfront. There... I've said it. I hated it!

:D

Still I have tried an a8, in fact it was the first one that I have tried in that pickup. A couple of a8s that is. And to me the change is too much. I haven't tried mixing with others though, and I might do that over the weekend. Yet, I have to confess, am not excited about it though.

I might be dogmatic dude making a mistake, but c'mon... This **** is completely subjective...

Anyways, I'll report.

You are absolutely correct. I understand about your turn-off to A8 and I absolutely agree that A8/A8 is way too much. But try an A5/A8, it's a whole other creature.

Re: How about a custom shop tapped P90? Any feedback?

I have long said, that someday when i get an LP Junior (single P-90 / wrap tail), that I am going to get a Custom shop P-90 that is tapped between Vintage and hot.

Re: How about a custom shop tapped P90? Any feedback?

and i predict you will dig it.

i love my esquire with the tapped pup. simple and kick ass

Re: How about a custom shop tapped P90? Any feedback?

On my Gibson LP Junior Special, I ended up with a Duncan Antiquity neck PU and an SP90-3n as the bridge PU.

Once in a while, I wish that the SP90-3n were not quite so hot. A quick tweak of the volume pot and all is well again.

Re: How about a custom shop tapped P90? Any feedback?

I wonder what it would sound like if they made a steel Tele bridge that would surround a P90....

Re: How about a custom shop tapped P90? Any feedback?

To beef up my bridge P-90's, I usually use either UOA5/UOA5, A8/A4, or A8/A5. The A4 or A5 moderates the A8.

Re: How about a custom shop tapped P90? Any feedback?

Am gonna be getting such a p90 as soon as possible. This Lollar p90 of mine sounded best with its stock mags, the others were changing it too much (have tried almost every combination). The character of the pickup was changing quite a bit. And that's not what I want frankly speaking. It sorta has some "tele" sound to it. I love that, and when I go for "thicker" sounding mags, that tele sound is screwed. So that you know the details.

I wanna keep that "tele" kinda sound. So mag swaps aren't the solution (for me, for my tastes)...

Anyways, it is sounding quite good. Yet, I keep wanting a thicker tone as well. Duncan CS can do these tones in one pickup, that's why am gonna be getting one.

B :)
