how can i get the adrian smith tone?

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

I can try.

Here's the problem with buying the pedals that Adrian uses, and Rich S touched on this.

The TS9 changes the way an amp acts moreso than the sound in many cases, and considering that you're using a Solid State Digital Modeler and he's using Tube amps, I don't think it will act the same.

So by all means get the Univibe and a Crybaby (I have no idea which one to use for Smith, I use one for me). They may or may not get you Adrian's tone.

I've dealt with cases like this before where someone gets all the right equipment, but gets frustrated as they can't dial in the sound they were expecting to get.

you know what? first i will buy the tube pedal , then i ll wait till my guitar be done to buy the other pedals. i think that will be better like this.

I'll say it again before I go... the TS isn't going to do the same thing to your Line 6 as it does to Smith's Marshall. If you want to use a pedal for the dirt, don't look at the ones Adrian uses (because his amp is so completely different from yours). Consider instead the sound you're trying to achieve. I think you should be looking for "Marshall-in-a-box"-type pedals like the MI Audio Crunch Box, the Marshall Guv'nor, the Sans Amp i mentioned earlier, or (ooh, here's a good idea) the new Boss ST-2 Power Stack.

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

Sorry - I thought you meant the Tube Screamer. That Hot Box look like it might do the trick.

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

Approximately around the Rock in Rio DVD Adrian was using the Marshall JMP-1 preamps, Marshall power amps, and Marshall cabs with 75 watt Celestion speakers.

Adrian has also been using Strats with floyd rose trems with a Dimarzio Super Distortion humbucker and 2 Fender Hot Noiseless single coils.

I do not know when he started using this gear or if it has changed significantly since, but that is what I think of when I think Iron Maiden.

If it were me I would shoot for a strat style guitar with a Super Distortion and try picking up a JMP-1 preamp.

I do not know what kind of guitar you have, but Adrian also has used in the past a Les Paul, Ibanez Destroyer, Strats, a Dean, and a few other things. Being that he uses a lot of different things it is good for you.

I am not familiar with your amp, but I believe the Crunch setting is suppose to replicate a Marshall head. How close it is to the Iron Maiden sound or to a JMP-1 I do not know. However, I would try that or the metal setting. Crank the mids and back off on the gain. It would also probably be beneficial to put a Super Distortion in the bridge position of your guitar.

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

hey guys , i was thinking and , i dicovered that if i buy a few pedals they would be before the amp modulation . so i decided to use just the effects of my amp, and just a few pedals , like the hot box , an equalizer and possible a overdrive.
what do you think about it?

what do you think about it?

I've found in my experience that I've never come across a modelling amp that takes drive pedals, boosts or EQs (when used as a boost atleast) very well.

As someone said earlier, using an OD pedal to boost the OD sound on your amp probably won't give you the sort of sound you're looking for due to the input of the model getting to driven and causing it to clip etc.

Pedals do seem to work better into a clean modelling amp, but if you're going to get your drive sound entirely from a pedal, what's the point in having all those available sounds in your amp?

I think a good option would be to try a valve OD pedal into the amp (set as clean and neutral as possible) and then go from there.

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

if you cant get the sound you are after with your modelling amp you will not get the sound you are after using pedals with your modelling amp.
Tube amps and modelling amps interact in a totally different way with pedals.
So you have discovered the limitations of modelling technology in your amp...ie. you cant get a satisfactory sound out of it.
This believe it or not is a good thing...it shows your ears have developed from whern you bought that line 6 thing and now you are ready for the real deal as far as amps go.
So the issue is this...they are expensive in Brazil right?
the answer is this....find a US dealer or seller that will ship to brazil. Look for second hand. A 40w dsl combo (or possibly some other modern marshall amp) will eat the line 6 for breakfast as far as prividing a satisfying sound. Sure its not the same amp adrian uses but it is a proper fire breathing all tube marshall. you will sound very good and you will feel like a rock god playing thru it. If you decide to use a tube screamer with an amp like that you will really see what an epic rock tone is all about. Buy a thing called a "step down" transformer for you amp that will allow you to use your US spec amp on local power supply. Job done.
If you cant find an ebay seller who will ship to Brazil, there are lots of great helpful guys on the forum who may be able to do it for you. I would if i could...but im in Austalia! lol

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

I agree with gibson175
maybe a good used (second hand) marshall is indeed the answer to your question:
jcm800 (any master volume circuit -2203,4,5,10 and combo variations -4410 ect..), jcm900 combos and dsl's combos - would be my first choices
pro junior is a nice amp but I wouldn't recommend it for IM or 80's HM sounds
vox ac15 and nightrain could get you closer, but a used marshall combo amp is what you need IMO (there's got to be a good one in your hometown in Brazil) try it out and give us your report

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

Hey guys , it's been a while since i made my last post here , so in that time i was testing and searching about pedals ( chorus , boosters , equalizers , delays , noise gates , etc.) .So , i was wondering if you can help me ( again lol) to find the Powerslave and Somewhere in time tones.
Untill now i´ve just got a nice marshall´s drive tone with only my amp, but i can´t get a lot of sustain of it.
So , what do you think that i need to get this tones?

Cheers!

A tube amp.

As was suggested before, try buying one on Ebay from America and having it shipped to you. Much cheaper than buying one locally.

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

Nothing can get you there but a Marshall as far as I'm concerned. If they're expensive, buy used. Put a Dimarzio Super Distortion in your strat and crank up a Marshall and there you go.
