So I have a suede strap that I would really like to be able to use but I cant stand how it grips my shirt and wont slide like a nylon strap will. Can I do anything to the underside of this strap to take some of the grippy off of it? I was thinking take the sander to it?

Anyone have anything else I can try?

The whole point of the suede is to grip.

Yes I realize that. I didnt buy this strap it was given to me. I wouldn't buy a grippy strap. But I like the look of it and would like to be able to use it.

Sew part of a nylon strap to the area where it comes in contact with your shoulder

Go to one of those shoe stores where people live an die for Jordan Sneakers..... where having perfect basketball shoes is a matter of life and death -or at least getting laid.

They will have a section for Leather and Suede care -with one that shines Suede that you roll on...

That or go to Wall Mart and try this cheap option for shining:

Or return it for a Leather Strap that is designed to do this :)

Sandpaper.

Suede is just "scuffed up leather." In order to smooth it back out to "regular leather," you have to remove the scuffs. It's a bit like wet sanding, but don't use water...start with something medium grit and work your way down to fine grit...maybe two or three steps should do it. What grit...??? That depends on the suede.

Stop using it. Just because it's a gift doesn't mean you have to use it..... Put it in a guitar case that you don't use for safe keeping.

Re: How can I slicken up a suede strap

I tried a few things. sandpaper, rasp file, baby oil, hot iron. nothing really did the trick so I busted out the sewing machine and sewed a nylon strap to the back side. Im happy with it now. Thanks for all the input

Cool sewing machine.

Re: How can I slicken up a suede strap

Duct tape
Clear cellophane packing tape

Any wide smooth tape
You will have to replace it occasionally

I don't understand . . . why do you want your strap to slide around more? Is always having your instrument in exactly the right spot messing with your playing somehow?

Because I dont like to stand completely still on stage, so my guitar will naturally move all over the place so having a slick strap allows me to get it back to the correct place easier without it pulling my shirt off in the process.
