I've made several speaker boxes and amp mounts covered in that stuff. From my experience of what I've made and what I've installed, it has no noticable effect on tone. The highs are still crystaline, and the lows still boom. It just fits in better when you make it for a guy with Rhino lining in his pickup.

I'm building myself a 2x12 cab. This stuff sounds interesting. Where can I get them? Also, would somebody be kind enough to tell me where I can get the Tolex material also?

angela instruments offers coverings as does mojo musical supply, you can also check your local automobile upholestery shop for materials, like what you see on Bad Cat or Matchless. Lots of choices out there.

I really wonder if the Durabak would be a huge tone suck, Stratman? I know Tolex takes a bit of the resonance away from a good solid wood cab. It would be interesting for sure. For a gigging musician, I think it'd kill. About as rugged a covering as you can get. Apply it thin enough and it might not be a tone suck. 2 coats max.

How about one thin coat?

This stuff appears to be a real tone eater, but it is suitable for the back of any pickup...

You can find billions of adds for spray on and DIY roll on liners in Truckin' or any other magazine for trucks. The roll on stuff is better, since you can apply it as thin as you need to and cover the area. The spray on stuff is much like the popcorn texture on ceilings, it spurts it out bit by bit and takes several coats to completely cover it.

Scott what about the old "Chicken sh#t" paint that you could only damage with a nuclear warhead. Maybe a market with the Hard Country players.

When my father worked for Nissan,in Australia, the factory rally team used it and it even had it's own part number. A fact I confirmed when Jeff Beaumont, ex works co-driver, inspected an ex-works Stanza/Violet/160J I had in my shed.

The problem with heavy paints is that I am starting to believe that they kill the natural resonance of the wood. I want this thing to sing. The more I think about it, staining is best, followed by some sort of tolex I guess, but that sucks tone a bit as well. I could offer the Durabak as an option if someone wanted it. Pretty easy to work with.

On a metal amp....HELL YEAH!

On yours, no......stained wood or tolex is the way to go!

How 'bout a green/white/orange mixed tolex covering????!!!! :beerchug:

MY Sentiments exactly, Green stain or Tolex w/ silver trim, save the "Industrial" look for an amp that can get that heavy....

And as you just noted I also don´t think spraying rubber on the cab is that great of an idea.... On a Head I see no problem, though
