How do 10" speakers and 12" speakers differ?

In general, of course, if you had a 4x12 with Celestion G12-75s and a 4x10 with eminence Ramrods; how would they sound?

I just picked those speakers, if you don't have experience with those particular speakers that's cool just comment anyway. :D

12s have more "umph"... better bass-response, I guess. 10s aren't so much- less "macho" in the Marshall stack-sense.

Don't quote me- I haven't played the two side-by-side.

Re: How do 10" speakers and 12" speakers differ?

To me the 12s have an overall fuller lower end and low mids....The 10s seem to concentrate more on the upper mids with better projection but less bass...Some 10s I've played through in a 4x10 cab pushed alot of air and were nice and tight sounding also...Depends on the speakers and cab also.

How about an X patter of 10' and 12' in a 4X12 cab?

Re: How do 10" speakers and 12" speakers differ?

10's have more farty lowend responce to my ears, I really don't hear them being more highendy or anything like that. Then again, I have limited experence with 10s.

any amp i've had with 10 inch speakers are interesting.. i love the better lows a 12inch offers but i remember a 4x10 Marshall cab from about 1980 that sounded wonderful... A bass player i knew owned it, but it was a guitar cab that once belonged to Alex Lifeson of Rush.. It was like it responded quicker the a 4x12....

The bass response of my 4x10 cab seems well balanced. It has 4 Eminence Legends in it, and i love the sound of this cab. I usually use a pedal or a few pedals with lots of control over tone to adjust the sound.

the amp ive been using most has one 10" and one 12". both sound great but mixed they sound fantastic. the 10" seems more focused but the 12" is bigger sounding with deeper lows

Re: How do 10" speakers and 12" speakers differ?

My roommate has 2x12 and I have a 4x10.

12's are definately deeper! He has generic 12's and I have eminince 10's (not entirely sure of model or voicing)

I love the relaxed grittyness of his 12's I'd say most stuff sounds better on 12's..

But the tightness of 10's is really good. Playing in Drop tunings gives very good response and I get awesome definition. The key area where my 10's are better though is in articulate accented picking. Also I get awesome projection in leads when I play live on my 10's

I will also add, the 10's make a great live guitar monitor. I can easily hear myself through everything, and I use a DI that emulates a 12" anyways.

Is that with a cab? If so, where did you get it at?

Well thanks for the tip on the speaker setup. I'll need to try some 4x10s out.
