How do dialup a cheap sounding tone

When I am playing blues or any kind of throwback music, sometimes I like to emulate the tone of some of those old acoustic blues boxes with the single coil slapped on them or Teisco type guitars that were so popular in the 60's. I think of Jack White as the master of squeezing this type of sound out of a guitar. I know I am not the only one that is occasionally in search of anti-tone. How do you people go about making a setup sound like a old/cheap guitar or cheap amp?

Re: How do dialup a cheap sounding tone

Get a cheap guitar and amp. Get a speaker you don't give a hoot about and rip the cone a bit. Turn it up way too loud, and make it fuzz and buzz.

Pick up one of those cheap battery powered amps and run it full tilt, maybe.

Re: How do dialup a cheap sounding tone

I am thinking more hi tech meets low tech, along the lines of Jack White's Third Man Records Bumble Buzz Pedal. I have no desire to start hoarding crappy gear.

This. My Vox AC1 with all the controls cranked is a monster. A tiny tiny monster. I wish they still made them, I'd grab a couple more just to **** with, wire into larger speakers. Though I guess part of the charm is overloading the tiny little speakers they have in there. Actually until I looked it up just now, I had no idea it had 2 small speakers vs. one slightly less small speaker. Interesting.

I got to use an old 60s era silvertone 1484 recently and it sounded GREAT.

They aren't cheap though, but I see them for sale for around 600-900 or so depending on condition.

I have a cheap little 25 watt tube combo with a 10" speaker which gets some great fuzzy sounds with some gain. Panned in contrast with a tighter gain structure for metal can be very interesting.

I think that a set of some Valco-type single coil pickups and a good big muff/ fuzzface type pedal would get you there. I bought a set of a VVSC pickups sold by Eastwood and they pretty much do the job ( especially the bridge one)

Wow I bet those would be cool in a Tele neck, might need to start another project.

Re: How do dialup a cheap sounding tone

have you tried micing the room instead of the speaker?
maybe cut all the bass and high end out and maxing the midrange?
molesting a speaker should work, too

Re: How do dialup a cheap sounding tone

You can get there with the following materials:

- A small speaker
- A 386 opamp
- Two 47 uF capacitors
- A 9v battery
- A stereo phone jack
- A housing for this amplifier

It quite literally can all fit into a cigarette carton. Not really hoarding crap-gear and costs nearly nothing to make.

Re: How do dialup a cheap sounding tone

I could have bought a bumble fuzz when I was in Nashville, but I wasn't spending $325 on a pedal that I could likely build myself. It doesn't even have knobs!

Re: How do dialup a cheap sounding tone

Check the Effects presets of your computer recording software. Hopefully, amongst these, you will find an EQ preset to simulate how things sound through the earpiece of a telephone. Apply this effect to recordings of your normal guitar.

Re: How do dialup a cheap sounding tone

Do you mean, for your recorded track? Push the mids then try to use simple low pass / high pass filters in your DAW. Start to cut highs as well as lows and for sure there will be a sweet spot when it starts to sound like an old radio that was the base of old amps. Some very gentle distortion that emulates a bad speaker helps, too.

Re: How do dialup a cheap sounding tone

set your bass and treble to zero on the amp. Wind back your guitar volume. Use a pick much heavier than you usually use.
