How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge Bridge and DiMarzio PAF in the Neck.

A vintage toned Marshall amp would also help.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Yup, that is THE Ace Frehely sound, Super Distortion thru a vintage 100w JMP. Unfortunately SD doesn't make anything that sounds just like the Super Distortion.

If you can, try to get a set of Super Distortions off eBay from the 70's or early 80's. From what I understand, there really is a difference between the older one, and the newer ones.

Of course, the lengths you go to really depend on HOW badly you want to get Ace's tone. I know that when I get my Les Paul Custom, I'll look and look until I find a set of 70's double creme SD's, even if they cost me silly $$.

Oh, and don't worry about the neck pickup, I'm not even sure Ace know's how to switch to the neck pickup. It was rarely even wired up in most of his guitars...he NEVER used it.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Yeah don'tr be fooled, the super distortion IS a vintage pickup.
Classic tone, but more power.

About the older being better, i'm not sure about that, but there are 2 kinds of superdistortion:
The DP-100 and the dual sound. The dual sound has been created to get better coil splitting sounds. Don't know which one is better but there's a slight difference in tone.

A-ha! I was wondering about that, because it seems in lots of his live concert footage that he's got the pickup selector in the middle position, which would imply that both the bridge and neck pickups are on.

Ace's neck pickup tone was SMOKIN' :D

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

He used the pickup selector to get the "kill switch" effect. You can do the same thing by turning the neck volume all the way down, as long as the volume pots are coupled together, just that the middle position will be dead.

Not only do you need a Super Distortion in a Les Paul, you need a classic Marshall too.

...a very cool effect I learned as a kid by listening to none other than Ace Frehley. I still like to do it, maybe a bit too much. :)

That fag Ace should show up and chime in here soon. Hell, he likes Ace Freely so much, I bet he could even tell you how to construct or where to buy a Ace freely blow up sex doll!!! LOL!!!!!

Here's Odie again with his repressed homosexual tendancies, sidetracking a good conversation with gay comments.

Not better tones, just to make it possible period. The early SD's were 2 conductor

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Thanks for the great replies. They were excellent. I knew I came to the right place for the answer to my question. Since the title of this forum is, " The Pickup Lounge...All pickups. All the time.", I feel comfortable discussing any topic that relates to pickups on this forum. I really appreciate the good people here who are quick to reply when they have a good answer. I'm sure I'll continue to ask any question that comes to my mind, knowing that there are people here with a lot of experience concerning pickups and tone who don't mind sharing what they know. Besides, discussing Ace Frehley's tone is fun and educational :laugh2: (haha). Thanks again for the ourstanding replies. Ace Frehley's tone really rocks.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Besides, several of my main guitars are Seymour Duncan equipped. I guess that makes me an official member of the Seymour Duncan users club. :bigok:

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Hope we helped a little. There's always something to learn, even for those of us that have been here for years.

Ace's tone is awsome, and it's ok that it's not a Seymour Duncan tone. I don't own a guitar that doesn't have Seymour Duncan pickups in it, so when I get my LP Custom I won't feel bad about putting a Super Distortion at the bridge.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Aside from cosmetics and materiel improvements, the only difference between 'old' and new DiMarzios is the fact that the 'old' ones weren't coil saturated.
