How do I install Humbucker Covers?

I have some 59's I would like to put covers on. Some say solder others say a little wax melted on the top of the pickup is sufficient to hold them in place. I route and wire guitars all the time so this should be simple. I just need good instructions.

Solder provides a better hold but wax does something more important which is deaden vibration of the cover, reducing the risk of the pickup being microphonic.

Is there a tutorial how to do this somewhere? As many pickup modders there are here I figured there would be.

its very easy, come on. just slide the cover over, with or without soft wax in it is up to you. press the pickup in the soft wax, wait till its set, then solder the cover to the baseplate. its really THAT easy.

As an alternative to wax, you can try a single strip of masking tape inside the cover to isolate the slug poles from the cover. Depending on your volume and gain levels you may get some squeal, but it's easy enough to try out. I also suggest using solder to secure the covers.

I buy most of my PU's used, and they're usually open coil (which I don't like the look of), so I put on covers, but rarely solder them on. The tape & wax usually hold them pretty snug. Makes it simpler to swap magnets. Unless you play very loud, this is good enough. The biggest challenge is getting covers with holes that match up with the PU pole piece spacing, as there's a lot of variation there.
