How do I mount a humbucker without mounting rings

I'm trying to build a guitar and I want to use one humbucker. But I don't want to use a mounting ring. It's very similar to the following picture.

How do I mount a pickup without a mounting ring?

Welcome!

That is a good question. I did it once to an Ibanez bass when I mounted a set of EMG P/J's in it. I simply used a thin piece of medium stiff foam under them, and used some proper length screws tha would NOT punch a hole through the backside of the bass.

Anderson Guitarworks uses a ringless technique, but I don't know how they do it.

Well you can screw the pup directly to the body, but you have no height adjustment.

Another option is to use springs, foam or tubing to create tension against the pickup screws.

Yup measure three times, and drill/scew once! Thin foam may be doubled if necessary. That is a great grahic Ayrton, as it shows a set of hard spacers (plastic or metal) underneath the pickup mounting screws. I didn't think about that!

Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for. This is one of the better forums I've visited. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions.

It looks like those images came from Warmouth. I'll take a closer look at their information.

I really appreciate the help.
