does anybody have any advice on how to strip the paint off my guitar? i have sanded guitars in the past, but that is a lot of work. plus i dont want the scuff marks in the wood. i was thinking i could put the body in a 5 gallon bucket of some kind of chemical and let it soak.

I soaked mine in a rubbermaid box thingy, and then took it to the carwash. I let it soak for about 4 days (in a well ventilated area of course) and then just went and blasted away with the pressure washer. Took it right off. You could also use a plastic spatula.

Aircraft stripper work for poly if that's what you have. If you are going for just a color change (no transparent 'wood' finish) I'd just scuff sand and paint over the poly...I do and it's a great, stable, dead flat base to paint over. Stripping is a nasty toxic mess, then you gotta seal the wood on top of that. Still gotta sand too.

Can't help you with the girlfriend, but I'd suggest dinner, a chick flick type movie and some soft candlelit music at home. With the guitar, the easiest thing that I've ever done is take it to a furniture repair store and have them strip it. No exposure to nasty chemicals, no scuff marks and you get a bare guitar in return.

Soak it in Strip-Eeze or a similar product....or you could also just save yourself the brain damage and acid burns and take it a place like Jet Strip and let them do it. Don't sand it...that just creates more work for yourself. Some of those Polyester finishes won't strip off with ANY paint stripper tho... Lew

Lew is right, Some of them poly finishes are like Bionic!! I've had variable
results striping poly with Aircraft grade striper. If you encounter one of
these poly finishes I've found if your cafeful it can be sanded down to
the original sand sealer. YES, It's alot of work. But if the bodies got
alot of dings and chips in it I feel it's the best way.
