Which amps? Are you talking non-master volume amps? Multiple gain stage amps?

But if you want a really full, developed distortion, you need to get the power tubes running and the speakers moving.

I am working on that right now, first proto type is done!

They make the preamp have more bottom and thickness. My preamp knob adds bass and low mids as well as gain. It is not the same as a cranked amp but I never have a reason to complain since it is thicker than my 800 pre-mod

The only person I have legitimately seen pull off a low volume cranked tone that is comprable to an amp running wide ass-open, is Mark in North Hollywood.

You can get these done with or without a master volume. The master I use is a post phase-inverter style, set to my specs and needs. It sounds wonderful even at very low volumes, and when turned all of the way up, is exactly the same sound as if it was never installed in the first place.
I guess it has to do with modding the master volume. Maybe Jeff Seal can shed some light on this?

The post master volume takes advantage of pushing the phase inverter tube which is a 12ax7 tube but considered part of the power amp section, its a nice feature, I like em
But its a totally seperate master volume control and its set up different, and uses a dual gang pot and some coupling caps.
