How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

I use an EQ pedal (clean) boost with a mid bump, as well as an overdrive pedal set to slight creamy OD + vol boost.

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

I setup my amp and then place a Maxon OD-820 in front with the gain and level at about 9 o'clock.
It adds just a touch extra of that gainy crispyness that tricks your brain into thinking you can play anything and it has always worked for me.

I still haven't been able to spend as much time as I'd like with my JCM800 head and the various pedals I got to go with it (SD-1, GE-7, Rat, MT2, Line6 M13), but from the small amount of time I was able to spend with each pedal, they each have their merits and drawbacks.

I set my amp for rhythm dirt. Then for smoother leads a Marshall Edward comp, and for dirtier leads an Amptweaker TightRock.

I prefer the Boss Blues Driver to tubescreamers because it's lighter, colors the sound less, & tightens without killing the chunky bass- however it's not true bypass.

The EP Booster is intriguing as it replicates the volume circuit of an Echoplex ( minus the delay tape.)

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

See a common trend here? Big volume boost, minimal grit added from the pedal. This combination always sounds best for me when using pedals.

Yes, I was actually noticing this is kind of a trend and that was the best result I got when I plugged my SD-1 with my PlimSoul. That also explains the trend in Boost pedals to include some dirt and now I feel like I wanna try a Boost pedal with some little EQ options and gain options.

Hardwire SC-2 is my main distortion, I boost it with a lovepedal white dragon fuzz or EQD Dirt transmitter for extra sputter and chunk

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

This depends on how much saturation I'm getting from the amp. If I'm getting a majority of it from the amp (like SLO levels), then a clean booster will do. If it's just a nice crunch (old Marshall), mid saturation level, then I'll use an overdrive pedal, like the SD-1.

If I could to run my amps to higher volume, I wouldn't use any pedal to put them in the sweet spot but, since this is not actually possible, I am using the clean channel really clean and adding what is needed with some pedals.

I'm typically using ODs very articulate, responsive and dynamic to put the tubes in their sweet spot (breaking-up boundaries, where you can get some disto picking hard or a clean sound picking soft) and, to add some flavour (british-crunch, bluessy drive, ...).
Any additional gain is being achieved by stacking several OD's or a medium disto or just using a hi-gain disto alone.

For british OD, I am loving the JTM side of the Weehbo JCM Drive or the Weehbo Helldrive (what an incredible pedal!).
For bluessy stuff, I am loving the Weehbo Dumbledore.
For a cleaner (but magic) and transparenter push, I was using the Xotic EP Booster.
Mad Professor Little Green Wonder is an awesome all-purpose OD, with roots in the TS but, getting rid of their drawbacks.

I highly recommend you Mad Professor's Red Ruby Booster then.
It has three "effects" in a pack.
1) Buffer (you can activate it or deactivate it with an inner microswitch)
2) Clean Booster
3) Treble Booster

One of the best boosters in the market.

The Xotic EP Booster is a clean booster that adds "I-don't-know-what" to the sound that simply makes it beautifuler. Don't overdo the effect, move that button between min and a quarter of turn.

And, lately, the Wampler Decibel+, a buffer with a booster (on demand). This one sounds as good as the Ruby Red and, is more dummy-proof.

And, the little and cheap MXR Micro-amp adds some warm pad to your sound, very musical. It's a very interesting pedal that doesn't get the atention it should.

I use an SD-1 to boost either my VFE Pale Horse or VFE Alpha Dog. Then , I use a Fulltone Fatboost 3 right after for solos(set with more volume and gain).
The FB3's gain is really transparent and lets the previous dirt unaltered.

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

I have tried almost every pedal mentioned here. If you just want to get louder I had the best luck with an eq in the loop with a mid bass and level boost and slight treble roll off. Down side was this did not produce any extra sustain. My current method is a cheap joyo compressor in front of the amp. Compressor nearly maxed out and of course midi controlled. The joyo is a very quiet compressor and I also switch in a isp noise decimator to control the little hiss it does produce.

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

I recently got the MBB kit from general guitar gadgets, and dug up some MA856 diodes I had laying around from when effectsconnection sold them a ways back. I swapped the op amp from a TL072 to a NE5532 and closed everything up. It doesn't have as much gain as my either of my SD-1 pedals, so it's more of an always-on kind of pedal. I like to run one of my modded SD-1's into it for a gain boost.

You guys have me really curious about the fulltone fat boost now though.

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

It depends. When I gigged in hard rock bands with a Twin or Hiwatt, a TS or Boss SD-1 was always on. Straight in with a JCM 800.

Lately I've been playing blues jams in small pubs. I crank my 15 watt Laney LC15 110, and control clean and dirty, and quiet and louder, from my guitar's volume control.

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

I don't. I set the amp to the highest gain level that I am going to need and then wind down the saturation from the volume pot on the guitar. Anything else comes from playing dynamics.

As if to underline the point, roughly one month ago, I purchased a pre-owned Catalinbread Super Chili Picoso Boost pedal. (It was the earlier version with the switchable Fat option.) I almost immediately realised that the pedal did not suit the way that I operate. Shortly after this discovery, I was contacted by the guy who had originally sold the pedal to the eBay vendor from whom I bought it. I got my money back and the pedal is now back with its original owner. Happy ending. :)

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

I used to use the good old EHX LPB-1. Sold it but I plan on building myself one soon.

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

Lately, i do not like to use a pedal to boost my sound/tone, as i feel it ALWAYS compress the hell out of it.

I prefer my tone to be raw/open sounding.

But if i use a booster of some sort, i really like the MXR Micro Amp, Jave Boost, and the EP-Booster.

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

I use this:

35dB boost, nice and fat sounding. Turn the volume down on the guitar, and get a sparkly, shimmery clean.

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

Digitech Screamin' Blues pedal in front of an overdriven amp....

Re: How do you boost your gain? Clean booster, clean with mids bump, overdrive pedal?

Have any of you guys used an old school Morley Power Wah Boost? Very raw and natural, I have retired mine just to try to get a few more years out of it.
