All of my nitro guitars get Gibson pump polish. Been using it for years now and never a problem. It feels like it adds a thin layer of wax, which I like.

If you've got a nitro finish you really owe it to yourself to use a microfiber cloth. They're fairly inexpensive - you can sometimes find them at your local $0.99 cents store. Anyways, they're great for polishing and buffing as they leave no dust or lint, very absorbent, and won't scratch your finish.
I've used them all: terry towels, t-shirts, cotton towels, flannel, etc etc and microfiber is the ONLY way to go.
