How do you disinfect a guitar?

Re: How do you disinfect a guitar?

This thread reminded me of an episode years ago...a friend left his (new 335) case open for a bit, and apparently his cat was a music critic and peed in his guitar case. When the cat finished it jumped out and jarred the lid closed.

When we were teenagers my drummer's dog lifted his leg and peed in the grill of the other guitarist's Fender Champ. God bless you, Paco, you were a good dog.

Re: How do you disinfect a guitar?

No. I didn't attend NAMM.

I ask because your timing is perfect, and demo guitars at an amp or pedal maker’s booth get played by hundreds over a few days.

Chlorox wipes

Really? You'd put chlorine bleach on your Les Paul?

Really?

Bill
I have a secret... Clorox wipes aren’t bleach. ;) They also say not to use on a bunch of different types of wood finishes, so unless it’s an MIM Fender I’d avoid them too.

Re: How do you disinfect a guitar?

^^^ as mentioned above -Chlorox Wipes (No actual Chlorine in them) work awesome on guitars with a Poly finish.

I've used them to get beer and sweat off the pickups and hardware after a gig

Re: How do you disinfect a guitar?

My friend who works for ibanez helped me clean my lp last week. For the fretboard he used disinfectant wipes. He said thats what they use at ibanez (the ones he used were not clorox brand but appeared very similar)

After going over it with the wipes, we applied some cleaner/ oil.

That's actually a gross thought. They should require people to wash their hands before handling the guitars. I would sure hope everyone would wash their hands after taking a dump and whatnot but who knows.

Of course it's only funny when it's not your stuff getting pissed on.

Re: How do you disinfect a guitar?

You could've used alcohol (common sense) and refrained from creating useless, pointless thread.

Dude, I give the guy some kudos. Dont think this thread is useless or pointless. I have guitar cleaners, but, none are disinfecting. I wouldnt know/known to use alcohol. I have used chlorox type wipes on fretboard mung, and poly finishes, but would be alittle concerned as to what to use on a Gibson finish. Sure wouldnt want to fork it up..

^^Sure. Did you not start a thread on what to clean the casters of the amps with, a while ago? And how to keep your feet clean in order to keep the pedals spotless, or something like that? I am not surprised, then.

Re: How do you disinfect a guitar?

Guilty as charged... Wasnt asking how to keep my feet clean, but used to have the board in a garage and tried to find a way to keep extra dirt off the pedals and castors get pretty thick with mung. Then you roll it inside and the crap gets in the carpet or on the floor.. Sorry, I like to keep my stuff nice and been married to a woman with extreme OCD for 30 years, so its kinda rubbed off.

Not picking a fight Bro... Just saying, isnt it better to ask than to risk messing up your gear? Peace..

Re: How do you disinfect a guitar?

How about antibacterial hand soap and warm water...??? I wouldn't even be afraid to use it on a fretboard...BUT, I'd dry the fretboard and hit it with lemon oil or oil soap afterwards. You might even want to wait up to 24 hours to ensure that it's totally dry. (Be careful putting it in front of a heater or something like that to dry it faster!!!)

+1

Booze has so many uses. I once clean-boiled my coffee machine with vodka as I didn't have vinegar. Fumes in the apartment were pretty thick :D

I don't really see how people discussing methods and sharing experience on this topic as a "useless/pointless" A thread may illuminate a method that is new or better or even worse than a google search -I get it, maybe you don't need this info (BTW Alcohol is not the best solution in all cases) -but other people on this thread are probably curious to hear what -especially full time luthiers are doing. -They may have tricks.

Somebody like ICTGoober probably has an overly strong opinion based on their experience :lmao: that is useful for the OP or you or me.

Personally, I use water, light detergent or Naptha -depending on the case.

What surprises me more than anything on this thread (aside from the pointless comments made by “the usual suspect” that is) is that nobody has asked you why you need to do this. Would I be correct in assuming that the above is the reason??? If so then it is most certainly not funny at all. And if so: there’s also, in all probability, a smell too. Now I know that vinegar is good for this but anybody care to give their input as to whether or not this would damage the guitar (maybe even a weak solution of vinegar and water maybe)??? Believe it or not alcohol will disinfect yes but it will not remove a smell i.e. the moment that there is moisture again the smell will return.

Isn't everything that way? Watch your friend step on a rake, and it is hilarious. Step on a rake yourself, and you curse everyone who laughs.

Re: How do you disinfect a guitar?

WHAT ARE WE TALKING HERE SMOKE SMELL OR JUST GUNK AND GRUNGE OR??
So far no one has addressed the elephant in the room here as in what are we dealing with and that makes a huge difference so---.
