How do you disinfect a guitar?

Re: How do you disinfect a guitar?

Aside from regular rock show sweat, blood, spit and beer that normally I am skeeved out about after a show anyways -has anyone here played on a Strip Club stage? Well I have and those girls rubbed themselves all over my guitar and such .... and being generally downright Seinfeldian when it comes to germs... you can bet I disinfected everything about that 335 and case before it re-entered my home -maybe 3 or 4 times.... the case smell from the smoke was terrible too -I pitched the case.

I killed the strings and strap, washed everything with deteregent and water, alcohol on the electronics like pickups and pots, then Naptha on most surfaces and in every crevice with a crevice tool

then after multiple passes -relubbed the nut, oiled the fretboard, relubbed pots etc etc.

the emotional toll was the hardest part though.

I never figured a 335 as the guitar you would bring to a strip club. :P

Re: How do you disinfect a guitar?

Question: "If it is recommended on this forum to simply use warm soapy water to clean a guitar, why am I the only one who thinks that antibacterial hand soap will 'disinfect' a guitar...???"

You're 3 year old nose-picking nephew comes over and decides to have a go at it with your guitar. Warm soapy water.

Puke that you fortunately didn't choke on last night in your sleep. Warm soapy water.

Now we're "disinfecting" a guitar.

Pet urine...??? Sure, we have to disinfect, but now the REAL issue is "How To Remove A Smell." Same with a used guitar that you bought from a smoker.

Contaminated biohazard...??? Now we've crossed the line.

WARM SOAPY WATER...!!! Use antibacterial hand soap. Why am I the only one...!?!

you arent the only one. People are making it more than it needs to be cause the OP left us to our imaginations by not saying why he needed to disinfect a guitar rather than just merely clean it. I agree that people have taken it to silly extremes tho. But isnt that what happens on the internet?

By the way, this was at the Clermont Lounge in Atlanta -google it -it's legendary and dirty -these weren't the kind of Strippers that bathe often that gorged themselves against my guitar.

That 335's fretboard is getting completely rebuilt right now -separated from the neck and re-planed and refretted.

So to your point, I should have requested to have it power washed and sterilized in a HAZMAT suit -I guess I did my local luthier kinda wrong

hopefully he's not getting itchy right now :lmao: I'll check on him this weekend when I go in to select frets.

Re: How do you disinfect a guitar?

I'm not going to reveal why I'm considering disinfecting my guitar as it's a personal matter, however, I will say that the guitar wasn't pissed on or bled on.

^^Sure. Did you not start a thread on what to clean the casters of the amps with, a while ago? And how to keep your feet clean in order to keep the pedals spotless, or something like that? I am not surprised, then.

Are you just looking to not get along with people or what? Having said that, you come off as quite the piece of work. Such a miserable life you must lead to go out of your way to criticize people every chance you get. First you criticize my post topic and now you are criticizing someone who replied to my post. Get a life, dude. You clearly have way to much time on your hands. I'm all for banning pain in the ass people like you as it would make this a much better place.

Re: How do you disinfect a guitar?

Dudes!!! Not particularly wanting to get involved here but anyway...

The OP doesn't want to talk about this obviously so leave it at that. We've all asked for further input and there's been none so there is obviously a good reason for that. For all we know: somebody died and was left in the room with the guitar for while. Now that would be personal. I don't have experience with this (to be honest I saw it on Mythbusters with the Camaro and the pig and we all know how that turned out) but if that were the case then I suppose I'd also be wanting to disinfect (sure would have to be a very special guitar though but that's just me and beside the point). The OP has like over 2 000 posts and has been a member since 2004 so you can be 100% sure he's not just here to pi*s people off or trolling or any such thing.

I agree. This thread spun WAAAAAAAY out of control. And I mean, it started out fine, then it got bad, and every time someone tried to get it back on track, infantile jackasses decided to inform us of their emotional intellect.

Fun is fun, but being an infantile jackass is being an infantile jackass. There is a difference.

I'm done opening this thread. SEE YA ELSEWHERE...!!! :)

I'm curious what makes you so sure of this? Why would join date or post count preclude someone from trolling?

The op asked for help but doesnt want to give details. I'm not going to sit here like Dr phil and ask him "help me to help you" Hes got enough suggestions if hes brighter than a crayon in a box of rocks he can figure it out.

But there is no need for him to get his knickers in a twist when people want details so they can help him.
