How do you guys use chorus?

You've already made it clear you dislike the 80s. You don't have to remind us at every possible moment.

He's just trying to help you not sound awful.

me? -I love the 80s. But I'd rather eat my own lips than use chorus.

I've lost count of the amount of times I've heard a decent player mess up a decent sound by adding chorus to 'thicken' it. You want to thicken your tone? -do it at the amp and at the fingers/guitar.

That chorus is making you sound stupid.

Erik: by the way, Ed was guilty of the chorus thing from 84 onward (albeit via a harmoniser), and some of Lynch's 80s tone definitely had chorus on them.

Can you give us an example of some really awful chorus usage? I am serious. I'd like to hear it and see if I think it sucks to my ear.

The harmonizer was used for the stereo effect in live use. The chorus didn't really get very prominant until For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. It's very obvious there, especially live. Lynch used it on a lot of clean tones, especially on the early records but later on it became less and less.

I see no problem using a little bit of chorus to accentuate things. Setting it to be overpowering I can see being a problem and I don't like the sound of it that way at all, but just a little bit really adds something without taking away from the natural tone that is already there. It's a matter of finding that setting.

We need to remember too, that many of the players back then had no clue what their gear did. They just wanted to plug and play with the current effect flavor of the month without really experimenting.

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

I use high gain into chorus to really sludge riffs up at times. I don't do it much, but when I do it it's noticable......think Crazy Train with more bass.

I'll also chorus leads on occasion, though I'm usually carefull to avoid that 80s cheese thing I do occasionally do it on purpose.

Lastly, I like to do the Metallica clean ballady thing.

Sometimes I'll kick it on if there's going to be a bunch of harmonics/artificial harmonics....just for that doubling sound.

When I play in stereo I tend to use the Dimensional D setting on my CE-20 alot. It really doesn't do the "chorus" thing, but it does increase the stereo separation of the two channels.

Lastly.....chorus is killer for modulating feedback. It's rare that I'll do a feedback solo without having the chorus engaged.

A select few from the many...

Perhaps the worst would be CC Deville's rhythm tone on 'talk dirty to me'.

Neal Schon on that album he did with Jan Hammer.

For an example of a GREAT player made worse by chorus: 5150 and OU812.

Not to mention the classic metal 'icy clean' chorus/compression patch on every damn cheeso floorboard fx unit ever built.

And anyone who used the 'clean 2' setting on a rockman (literally thousands of records).

But much worse are everyday gigging guitarist's use of chorus. That's where it gets really annoying.

That setting is OFF. there ya go, glad I could help.

As for EVH: it's all over the first two Van Hagar records.

And Lynch: try replicating 'The Hunter' without a chorus...

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

I use chorus for throwing through the windows of the homes of people that I don't like.

Every time I turn on a chorus pedal, I think of the intro to Paradise City, which is the most annoying guitar sound I've ever heard.

That's your opinion. You've stated you don't like it and that is fine, but don't slam others that do.

Yeah, you're right about the first to records with Sammy. There's some songs on there that had it on pretty thick.

I think The Hunter has that chorus effect on it from dual rhythm tracks. When you do two rhythm tracks played the same way, it is not uncommon for a natural chorus effect to occur.

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

You know thats funny...just the other day I was thinking whether or not using a chorus was too much of a cliche...Maybe I could start using a phaser or a flanger...for that same subtle little 3d effect...just a different flavor perhaps will keep people from having flashbacks of poodle hair and zebra/leopard print tights...

Then people will be flashing back to all the grunge/nu metal bands that overused phasers and flangers. Basically the same thing, just a different time period.

Believe me, I only have your best interests at heart, chorus boy.

Friends don't let friends use chorus.

Hey, whatever you think. I've already stated that I used it in a very subtle way. I know I could play without it and most of the time at home I do.

And you're starting to sound like Dave (theodie).....:laugh2: "...your best interests" (Dave is anti-JB) and the "Friends don't let friends...." thing. :D

Yeah...well I dont over use it in my opinion. Sure people have done it in the past but that doesnt mean everyone who uses them now does. Besides different strokes for different folks.:burnout:

A Dimension C???? Man, those things are incredible. Once of the best chorus effects ever made. Hold on to that thing.

Ya i got lucky getting one! I poke around pawn shops from time to time and i gave a store $30 Canadian for that pedal a couple of years ago.... I saw another one at another pawn shop in town and they had someone tell them that they are collectable and they took the $50 price off it and stuck $140 as soon as the guy left..... Wish i had seen it before the guy opened his mouth!

You should have followed him out and kicked him in the nuts....LOL. Why didn't he buy it? :smack: What a moron. They're almost $200 on eBay now.

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

If you are going to use chorus, you've gotta USE IT! Come as you Are, baby... ;)

I bought a small clone 'cause I thought a chorus was an essential effect, but I hardly have it in the chain now. I actually use a subtle phaser much more often.

WHen I think bad chorus, I think of 80's Rush.

Yeah, I do, since you made the "Friends don't let friends..." comment. :laugh2: I thought of Dave right off cause he busted my chops about the JB a lot, and still will...lol. It's hard in internet conversation to tell one's intentions sometimes.

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

Hot Grits is cracking me up on this thread, and I tend to agree with him, but don't forget, he also likes pink paisley teles and has a pink shredstick, so he's as deep into the 80's as anyone! hahaha

As for me, I bought one for who knows what?.....Everytime I step on it, I remind myself of Andy Summers, so I set it to emulate a Leslie, but I rarely use that sound either. Anyone want to buy one of the best chorus's around??
PM me, if you want to buy a minty clean Fulltone Choralflange. Hot Grits reminded me why I need to sell it.
